Men's Rowing Holds Off WPI For 3rd Straight Baker Cup

WORCESTER, MA (April 23, 2023) - The Jumbo men's rowing first varsity eight held off host WPI to win its third straight Baker Cup Sunday morning on Lake Quinsigamond.

The Jumbos have now held the Cup since 2019 (the 2020 and 2021 races were not held due to COVID). Today they were leading comfortably before needing to withstand a late over-the-head crab malfunction. The Jumbos, tied for third in the first varsity eight poll, would cross the finish line less than a second in front of #6 WPI with a 6:05.2 winning time to the Engineers' 6:06 mark. Connecticut College was also in the race and placed third (6:57.1).

Tufts' winning team consisted of coxswain Rachel Halliday, stroke Nick Kuranda, Alex Maykel, Max Landers, Max Nusbaum, John Griffin, Ryan Hankins, Harrison Sweet and Liam Jenkins.

The Jumbos won all five of their races overall on Sunday. In the 2V8 Tufts traversed the 2000-meter course in 6:13.2 for a 5.51-second margin over WPI (6:18.71). The Jumbo team was Aidan Keusch (coxswain), stroke Drew Niles, Chris Millay, Eric Rohloff, Miles Smith, Xander Mesires, George Lakis, Corbin Steck and Ryan Kane.

For 3V8 Tufts had a winning margin of better than 10 seconds with its 6:16.5 time compared to WPI's 6:26.66. Coxswain Logan McLennan with the eight of Teddy Schneider, Charlie Guerra, Henry Gray, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Nick Gravenites, Abe Nelson, Fritz Oldenburg and  James Luck gave Tufts this victory.

The Jumbos continued to increase their victory margin as a show of depth with their fourth boat taking a 6:20.9 to 6:34.86 win (13.96 seconds difference). Coxswain Nole Wade guided stroke Alex Flynn, Maxwell Rosenberger, Nathan Henderson, Saul Meacham, Colin Cooper, Elias Leggat-Barr, Robert Arsenault and Griffin Hardy.

In the final race of a rainy morning, the Jumbo varsity 4+ of coxswain Michelle Chua with Andrew Fisher, Alden Taylor, Peter McCormick and Aleksi Sefanov defeated Connecticut College by over a minute 7:13.4 to 8:15.63.

Tufts will finish its regular-season with races at #1-ranked Williams College next Saturday.
