Swank's Seven Goals Lead Men's Lacrosse Past Conn. College in Quarterfinals Of NESCAC Tournament

MEDOFRD, MA (April 29, 2023) -- The No. 1 ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team raced out to an early lead and never looked back defeating Connecticut College, 20-6 in NESCAC Quarterfinal action from Bello Field Saturday afternoon. 

With the victory, Tufts (16-0) advances in the NESCAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, and will take on No. 4 seed Amherst College Saturday May 6th, at 12 p.m. in action from Bello Field. 

The Jumbos scored the first eight goals in the game as five different players found the back of the net. Just 14 seconds into the game Mason Kohn scored after winning the opening faceoff. Tommy Swank and Kurt Bruun each netted a goal just two minutes apart as Tufts took a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as Jack Regnery assisted Swank on his goal.

Swank added a second goal with Tufts on the man-up as Max Ettinghausen found him. Swank then scored his third just 56 seconds later after the Jumbos got into transition following a Conner Garzone save as Bruun assisted him. Bruun and Kevin Christmas each scored to make it 7-0 Tufts with Ettinghausen picking up his second assist on the Christmas goal. Louis Timmins made it 8-0 Jumbos as the Camels scored with 35 seconds left in the quarter to send it to the second quarter 8-1 Tufts.

The goals kept coming in the second quarter as Charlie Tagliaferri scored his 30th giving the Jumbos a 9-1 lead. Swank netted another goal, his 50th this season, as Ethan O'Neill found him to bring the lead up to 10-1. Next it was Jack Boyden would made it a 10-goal lead for the Jumbos, but JJ Ford scored a man-up goal for Conn. College to make the score 11-2 going to halftime.

Tufts poured in eight more goals in the third quarter, outshooting Trinity 18-8 in the quarter. The Jumbos got the lead up to 13-2 after Tagliaferri and Timmins both found the back of the net as Bruun and Sam Frisoli assisted them. Following a Conn. College goal, Bruun and Swank made it 15-3 as Regnery again found Swank. Jared Rainville scored to make it 15-4 as the Jumbos would go on a four-goal streak to finish off the quarter. Swank scored two more to bring his total to seven goals in the game as Ettingshausen and Bruun both scored on the man-up with Bruun and Boyden assisting on the goals.
 
The fourth quarter saw back-and-forth action between the team as Conn. College scored two of the three goals scored in the quarter. Beau Keough scored his third goal of the season to provide Tufts to winning margin of 20-6.

Swank led the way in goals with seven while Bruun added seven points, four goals and three assists.
 
Tagliaferri and Timmins both scored twice with Boyden finishing with a goal and an assist. Ettinghausen had three points, one goal and two assists as Kohn, Christmas, and Keough each scored.

George Panagopoulos finished with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Joey Waldbaum adding a caused turnover and three ground balls. As a team the Jumbos caused 13 turnovers.

Kohn dominated at the face-off "X," going 9-of-12 with eight ground balls for the Jumbos, with Parker Merril going 9-of-13 with six ground balls. Garzone made nine saves in net to earn the win. Cody Wiebe, Eugene Yoon, Ben Friedman, and Shane Molloy all came in to help close out the game. 

Tufts outshot the visitors 68-33 on the afternoon, while winning 22 faceoffs. Tufts picked up 44 ground balls during the game.

For the Camels, Rainville had three points, two goals and assists while Forad had two goals. Will Rice finished the game saving 14 shots.
