Waterman Promoted To Men's Soccer Associate Head Coach

MEDFORD, MA (August 18, 2023) -- With the Tufts University men's soccer season right around the corner, head coach Kyle Dezotell has promoted Mark Waterman to Associate Head Coach of the Jumbos heading into the 2023 campaign.

"I am thrilled that we're able to promote Mark Waterman to Associate Head Coach of our Tufts Men's Soccer program," said Dezotell. "Mark has been with me basically since day one when I arrived in 2020. He has been a valuable asset to our student-athletes which includes capturing a NESCAC Championship and two NCAA Tournament runs in our two competitive seasons together. Mark is a great colleague and friend to me and our staff. I believe that he is one of the best young coaches in the country and am excited that our players will benefit from Mark taking on even more leadership responsibilities within the program."

Waterman has been part of the Tufts men's soccer staff since the 2020 season, as he helped the program navigate the difficult times of CoVID-19. After the pandemic subsided, he was on the sidelines for a pair of successful seasons for Tufts in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, the Jumbos went 15-2-4 overall and 6-1-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), advancing all the way to the NCAA Quarterfinals while earning another NESCAC title with a 2-0 win over Connecticut College.

The Jumbos also earned NCAA Tournament wins that season over New England College, Stevens and Washington College. In 2022, the Jumbos went 8-3-7 overall while earning another berth into the NCAA Tournament followed by an NCAA First Round win over UMass Boston in Oneonta, NY. This is Waterman's second stint on the sidelines at Tufts, as he was also a member of the staff that earned the 2016 Division III title, as part of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coaching Staff of the Year.

Waterman played four years at Denison University as a midfielder. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics at Denison in 2015 and a Master's in sports leadership from Northeastern University in 2017. At Denison, he played in 67 games and tallied 57 points on 25 assists and 16 goals. Waterman served as a captain his senior year and was a three-time All-Conference player. His 25 assists rank second all-time at Denison.

"I want to thank John Morris, Alexis Mastronardi, and Kyle Dezotell for the promotion to Associate Head Coach," said Waterman. "Having spent six years in two different stints at Tufts, this place truly feels like home. I am excited to get back to work and keep helping Kyle push the program forward."

The Jumbos get their 2023 season underway Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m. on Bello Field with a home tilt against MIT.
