DelGiudice OT Goal Wins It For Field Hockey Over Amherst 2-1

MEDFORD, MA (September 15, 2023) – Senior co-captain Andrea DelGiudice scored on a penalty corner four-and-a-half minutes into overtime giving the #6 Tufts Field Hockey team a 2-1 victory against #10 Amherst College on Friday evening at Ounjian Field.

Tufts earned four corners in the overtime period, including three in a row with DelGiudice scoring on the final opportunity. Taking the insert from Ashley Zolin at the top of the circle, DelGiudice stick-handled and once a defender approached she grounded a shot through the middle of the defense and in to give Tufts the win.

The Jumbos had trailed 1-0 with under eight minutes remaining in regulation. Amherst's Sam Maynard brilliantly dribbled through two Tufts defenders towards the goal on the left side and lifted a shot over Tufts keeper Lydia Eastburn for the first goal of the game.

Tufts responded impressively though, scoring five minutes later during a corner attempt. After the insert by Kylie Rosenquest, DelGiudice had a shot that was saved by Amherst's Sara Nidus. Tufts' Hannah Biccard was on the spot for the rebound and sent a short pass to Rosenquest in front of the goal and she directed it in to tie the score.

Neither team had a shot over the remainder of the game and it went to seven-on-seven play in overtime where Tufts won it. The victory was the Jumbos' seventh straight over Amherst dating back to 2017 and the second in a row in OT.

Eastburn was sharp in goal for the Jumbos making 10 saves as the Mammoths out-shot Tufts 14-10. Perhaps her best stop of the night came on a shot by Amherst's Abby Kays with three and a half minutes left in the third quarter of a scoreless game at the time. Kays was set up for a blast right in the middle of the circle and Eastburn kicked it out.

The Jumbos would finish with a 7-5 edge in corners after their strong overtime period. Niduas stopped four shots in the Amherst cage.

Tufts is off next week until playing its Homecoming Game on Saturday (Sep. 23) versus Hamilton College.
