#5 Field Hockey Suffers First Loss at #2 Babson 2-0

BABSON PARK, MA (September 26, 2023) – Second-ranked Babson College gave the #5 Tufts University field hockey team its first loss of the season 2-0 on Tuesday at MacDowell Field.

The Beavers (9-1) controlled the first three quarters before Tufts (6-1) finished strong in the fourth. However, the Jumbos couldn't get one past Babson keeper Bayla Furmanek and lost their third straight in the series between the teams.

After a scoreless first period, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead early in the second quarter. From the outside Camille Marsh sent a ball into the middle of the circle that Caroline DiGiovanni collected. She went right to set up her shot and blasted it inside the right post.

The Jumbos would get their first corner and first shot at 11:09 of the second period, with an attempt by Kylie Rosenquest going wide to the left.

The hosts would dominate the rest of the second quarter, but were unable to add to their lead as Tufts keeper Lydia Eastburn made three saves in the period. At halftime, Babson had advantages of 11-1 in shots (4-0 on goal) and 8-1 in corners.

The Beavers would add to their margin when they were awarded a penalty stroke early in the second half and Meara Hanyon scored to make it 2-0. A minute later Babson had two shots during a corner opportunity, but Tufts' Gabby Sousa made a defensive save and Eastburn had another stop.

Tufts put its first shot on goal early in the fourth quarter when Rachel Scrivanich tipped a ball that had snuck through the Babson defense, but Furmanek made the save. Later Tufts' Mia D'Angelo would put two shots on Furmanek from close range that were stopped, and the Jumbos had two corners including a shot by Andrea DelGiudice that the Babson goalie knocked away to preserve the shutout.

Furmanek finished the game with four saves, all in the fourth, to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Eastburn had six at the other end for Tufts.

The Beavers were ahead 16-5 in shots (8-4 on goal) and 10-3 in corners in the final stats.

Tufts is at Colby College for a NESCAC game on Saturday at 1 PM.
