Caroline O’Neill Records Season’s First in 1-1 Hard-Fought Draw Against Colby College Mules

MEDFORD, MA (September 30, 2023) – Caroline O'Neill recorded her first goal of the season from Waterville, ME in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents Colby College. Jumbos held on to the lead for much of the game until Colby was able to find the equalizer in the 77th minute. Forcing the conference opponents to split the points on the day.

O'Neill scored early in the first half following a free kick earned just at the edge of the 18-yard box on the right wing. O'Neill stepped up and delivered a curler that whipped past the wall of defenders and into the left side netting past Colby sophomore goalkeeper MK Marshall. Ascending Tufts into the lead with plenty of game left. Today's contribution adds to the two career goals she recorded last year.

Gigi Edwards continues to play well, recording three remarkable saves against four shots she faced on the afternoon. In her four starts, Edwards has faced 35 shots and saved 21 of them, good for an 87.5 save percentage on the year, earning herself a 2-0-2 record thus far, proving her worth in her earned opportunities this year.

Jumbos were highly aggressive on the offensive end, outshooting the Mules 17 to nine, (nine to four on target in favor of the Jumbos). Both teams earned five corner-kick opportunities on the day. Mules were able to capitalize on one of their corners late in the second half, as first-year defender Samantha Dewitt was able to strike home a corner that took a deflection in Tuft's 18-yard box to give the Mules the late equalizer.

Elsi Aires continues to lead the way offensively for this squad, as she recorded a team-high three shots on goal. Increasing her season totals to 29 thus far through eight games.

Jumbos women's soccer improves to 4-2-2 this season following today's draw, 2-2-2 in the NESCAC, as Colby College improves to 2-5-1.

Tufts University women's soccer is back in action again tomorrow, Sunday, October 1 against Husson University from Bangor, ME. Live stats, and video coverage are available at Tufts University - Official Athletics Website (gotuftsjumbos.com).
