Rosenquest, DelGiudice Score Twice as Field Hockey Opens With 5-0 Win Over Wellesley

MEDFORD, MA (September 6, 2023) – Senior Andrea DelGiudice and junior Kylie Rosenquest scored two goals apiece as the #6 Tufts field hockey team posted a dominant 5-0 victory against Wellesley College in the Jumbos' season-opener Wednesday night at Ounjian Field.

The Jumbos out-shot Wellesley 38-1 and had a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners, off which they scored twice. The visiting Blue took their first loss of the season dropping to 2-1.

Tufts went ahead 1-0 two minutes into the game as DelGuidice took a pass from Lainie Pearson and broke into the middle of the circle. She pushed it ahead to Rachel Scrivanich who had a step on a defender near the left post. Rosenquest would tap in Scrivanich's pass across the goal mouth for the Jumbos' first goal of the season.

The Jumbos then went ahead 2-0 with under two minutes to play in the first. Rosenquest battled to win a ball at the top right of the Wellesley circle and lifted a pass to Mia D'Angelo in front of the goal that could not be controlled. D'Angelo retrieved it and sent it back across the goal to Rosenquest, where she took a step back and delivered a soft shot that scored into an open right side of the cage for her second of the game.

Tufts then scored off a corner with just under five minutes left until halftime. D'Angelo inserted to Gabby Sousa, who sent it to DelGiudice on the left side where she quickly grounded a shot into the goal for her first of the year. The game went to the half with the hosts leading 3-0.

First-year Katarina Villa set up the Jumbos' fourth goal 12 minutes into the third. She stole the ball from a Wellesley player and drove into the circle where she sent a pass to Claire Gavin in the middle. Her back-handed shot broke past Wellesley keeper Kyra Deehr-Lewis making it 4-0.

The last Tufts goal barely a minute into the final quarter looked similar to their third score. Off a corner, Sousa found DelGiudice on the left side again and she sent one home for her second of the game and a 5-0 Jumbo advantage.

Deehr-Lewis was busy for Wellesley making 19 saves, including one on a penalty stroke. Tufts sophomore Lydia Eastburn made her first collegiate start and had to stop just one shot to record a shutout.

The Jumbos open their NESCAC slate on Saturday at Connecticut College.
