WALTHAM, MA (January 27, 2024) – The Tufts University women's fencing team won three of its four matches at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University today including a victory against an NYU team that was ranked #1 in the Division III Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Jumbos, who were fifth in that poll, defeated NYU 14-13, including a 6-3 record in the foil matches. Senior

Shannon Chen all won their third-round matches against their NYU competitors to take the win. Chen was 3-0 in foil and Lau had two wins overall.
Though NYU had 5-4 wins in epee and sabre, several Jumbos picked up key wins that added to the team triumph. In epee, sophomore

Ayelet Book had a win and junior
Olivia Tomasello had a key victory when she was subbed in for a third-round match. For sabre, first-year
Nitika Subramanian had two wins, while junior
Anat Katz and first-year
Mina Chioldi both had one.
Tufts also defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology 18-9 and Stevens Institute of Technology (NJIT) 21-6 on Saturday, while they took an 18-9 loss to a Duke University team that was ranked #9 in the Division I Preseason Poll. The Jumbos have a 16-13 overall record after today's results.
Lau won two foil matches and Chioldi was 3-0 in sabre against Duke. Chen in foil and Katz and Subramanian in sabre were all 3-0 versus NJIT. Lau and Levi in foil and Chioldi and sophomore
Alexia Newell for sabre were 3-0 against Stevens.
Chen had the most successful day overall for Tufts with wins in nine of her 11 foil matches for a .818 winning percentage. Lau was 9-3 in foil (.750). Chioldi at 7-2 (.778) and Subramanian at 7-3 (.700) were the sabre leaders. Bei led the Jumbos in epee (7-4, .636).
Next on Tufts' schedule is the New England Championship hosted by MIT on February 24.
