DelGiudice, Rosenquest Lead Jumbos Past UNE 6-0

MEDFORD, MA (October 16, 2024) – Andrea DelGiudice and Kylie Rosenquest both had two goals and two assists as the #6 Tufts University field hockey team defeated the University of New England 6-0 in non-conference action at Ounjian Field Wednesday night.

The Jumbos tied their season-high for goals while improving to 10-2 overall. The Nor'Easters dropped to 6-8 with the loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Jumbos exploded for three goals in three minutes in the second quarter. On a UNE restart, Rosenquest broke up the play and directed the ball to Claire Gavin on the left side. Her shot would trickle through the goalie for a 1-0 Tufts lead five minutes into the second frame.

The Jumbos would score three in a row on corners from there. Seven minutes into the second, the insert from Kayleigh McDonald went out to Lainie Pearson. She sent it to DelGiudice on the left, who zipped a pass across the goal area to an open Rosenquest whose wrist shot eluded the goalie's glove for a 2-0 Jumbo advantage.

Tufts finished its strong second quarter with a Rosenquest insert on a corner out to DelGiuddice up top, from where she drove home a shot for a 3-0 lead with 6:43 remaining in the first half. The Jumbos held advantages of 16-0 in shots and 8-1 in corners for the first 30 minutes of play.

DelGiudice and Rosenquest would connect on the fourth goal as well nearly seven minutes into the third quarter. McDonald inserted a corner out to Pearson, who sent it down to DelGiudice in the middle. She passed over to Rosenquest on the right who again flipped her shot into the cage for her second goal of the game.

An aggressive defensive play by Kate MacKenzie set up Tufts' fifth goal. She changed in to break up a UNE pass and sent it to Chloe Brants outside the circle. Brants furthered the ball down to Hannah Biccard in the left side of the circle, who then fired a pass through three defenders to DelGiudice. She couldn't handle the ball cleanly, but quickly chased it down and drilled home her 12th goal of the year seven minutes into the third.

First-year Riley Schmidt's first collegiate goal closed the scoring six minutes into the final quarter. Classmate Ellie Wilkins knocked down a UNE aerial in their own end, then won a challenge from a defender and got the ball down to Schmidt alone in front. She turned and fired for the goal.

Tufts had made a goalie change early in the second half with Isabel Ginns entering. She would make the only save necessary for the Jumbos in the fourth quarter, stopping a blast by UNE's Lily Clough on a corner. That was the Nor'Easters lone shot of the day.

Ginns shared the shutout with Lydia Eastburn, who picked up her 10th win of the season. The Jumbos outshot UNE 28-1 overall and had an 11-3 advantage on corners. Nor'Easter Dawn DeWeese-Moss had nine saves in the visitors' cage.

Tufts will host #1 in the nation Middlebury College at Ounjian Field on Saturday with an 11 AM start.
