MEDFORD, MA (October 27, 2024) – Junior
Hannah Biccard scored two goals and assisted another as the fourth-ranked Tufts University field hockey team took a 5-1 win over visiting Roger Williams University on Sunday night at Ounjian Field.
Head coach
Tina Mattera's team celebrated their seniors before the game.
Chloe Brants,
Claire Gavin,
Kayleigh McDonald and
Kylie Rosenquest were recognized.
The victory lifted Tufts to 12-2 overall, the team's most wins in a regular-season since 2021. The Jumbos go for their best regular-season record since 2018 on Tuesday when they host Bowdoin College in the last game before the post-season starts.
Roger Williams dropped to 14-6 with the loss, which stopped a seven-game winning streak for the Hawks.
Tufts' five goals were the most scored in regulation against Roger Wiliams this season. The Jumbos got started early as
Andrea DelGiudice recorded her 13th goal of the season five minutes into the contest. A corner insert by McDonald went to
Claire Casey up top. She sent it in to the left where DelGiudice flipped it inside the left post. Her 13 goals are the most by a Jumbo since Gillian Roeca's 15 in 2021.
Less than four minutes later Tufts had a two-goal lead. DelGiudice picked the ball away from a RWU player on the right curve of the circle and fired a pass to
Reagan Malo at the left post where she skillfully tipped it in.
The Jumbos would crown the first quarter with a third goal. On a corner, Biccard controlled the rebound of a DelGiudice shot, turned and sent the ball to the right post where
Gabby Sousa was in place to score the first goal of her collegiate career with 25 seconds left.
Tufts added a goal in the second quarter. Gavin broke up a Hawks pass and charged towards goal for an open shot. RWU keeper Jill Haudenshield came out strong and made the save, but the deflection bounced over to Biccard. She batted it towards the goal where a defender got a stick on it but was unable to keep it out of the net with 6:45 to go until halftime.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Jumbos tallied their fifth on Biccard's second of the game. She started the play with a break-up near midfield and then charged into the circle. She retrieved the ball deep on the left side, turned and sent a shot through a sea of players and in at 9:31 of the fourth.
The Hawks would stop the shutout with just 1:35 remaining in regulation. From the right sideline in the Tufts end, Grace Rocheleau sent a ball through to Elizabeth Duquette for an open shot in front of the goal. Chelsea King was able to deflect the shot past Tufts goalie
Isabel Ginns, who had entered at halftime.
The Jumbos finished the game with advantages of 30-6 in shots and 9-1 on corners. Haudenshield made a season-high 12 saves for the Hawks. Starter
Lydia Eastburn stopped one shot for Tufts in the first half and Ginn made two saves during her stint.
