MEDFORD, MA (October 5, 2024) – The Tufts University field hockey team did not allow a shot by Trinity College and scored three times in the second half to take a 3-0 NESCAC win over the Bantams on Saturday afternoon at Ounjian Field.
The sixth-ranked Jumbos finished with advantages of 34-0 in shots and 8-0 in corners while improving to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Trinity remained winless in NESCAC (0-4) while dropping to 4-4 overall.
The Jumbos overcame a frustrating first half in which they did not score despite attempting 19 shots and receiving six penalty corner chances. Trinity first-year goalkeeper Sydney Korkosz was sharp with 11 saves in the first 30 minutes of action.
Tufts finally broke through early in the second half when senior
Kylie Rosenquest capitalized on heavy action in front of the Bantam goal. Senior
Claire Gavin had brought the ball into the circle for Tufts and passed down to
Hannah Biccard who had a shot saved on the left side. The ball eventually squirted out to Rosenquest in front of the cage and she swept it in for a 1-0 Tufts lead.
Meanwhile the Jumbos were shutting down any Trinity possession before it resulted in a shot attempt. Junior
Gabby Sousa, sophomore
Claire Casey and first-year
Kate MacKenzie were the last line of defense leading Tufts' strong overall effort on that side of the field.
The Jumbos went up 2-0 with 3:20 left in the third quarter when sophomore
Reagan Malo took a long pass from senior
Lainie Pearson and changed down the right side. Malo cut into the circle at the end line and sent a pass across to Biccard in front and she deflected it in.
Tufts would go up 3-0 on Gavin's goal early in the fourth. On a corner, senior
Kayleigh McDonald inserted to Rosenquest and she sent the ball down to Gavin at the left post. Her first back-hander was saved, but the next went into the cage.
Korkosz was excellent all game for Trinity and finished with 19 saves. Neither Jumbo starter
Lydia Eastburn or sophomore
Isabel Ginns, who played the last eight minutes, had to make a save for the Tufts shutout.
The Jumbos remain in conference play with their next game at Amherst College on Wednesday night.
