POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2024) - The Tufts University women's fencing team won four of its six matches in action at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday.
The Jumbos had wins over Haverford College (21-6), Lafayette College (19-8), Stevens Institute of Technology (17-10) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (23-4). The Tufts losses came against Yale University (17-10), the #12 ranked team in Division I, and Johns Hopkins University (17-10), who is one ahead of Tufts in the Division III rankings at #4.
Tufts had several excellent individual performances today. Junior
Karen Bei won 15 of her 16 epee matches for a .938 percentage. Also losing just once today while posting eight victories for .889 percentages were first-years
Anahat Bawa in saber and
Jessica Charalel in foil. Sophomore
Olympe Jean won seven of eight (.875) in saber.

The saber group had a 38-16 record overall in their six matches. They won 5-4 in the match against Yale. Everyone who fenced in saber for the Jumbos had a winning record. Joining Bawa and Jean were senior
Millie Girardi (12-6, .667), sophomore
Nitika Subramanian (6-4, .600) and senior
Anat Katz (5-4, ..556).
Nine victories from first-year
Sophie Guan (9-6, .600) led Tufts in foil today, where the team was 35-19 overall. An 8-6 mark (.571) by first-year
Saanvi Kapoor and six wins in 11 bouts (.545) from senior
Lea Levi were other foil leaders. Tufts earned a 32-4 record (.889) in foil in its four victories today.

In epee Tufts won 6-3 against Johns Hopkins. That included three wins from Bei and two by senior
Olivia Tomasello, who finished 8-7 on the day (.533). The Jumbos broke even in epee overall with a 27-26 mark.
Next for Tufts is the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season at Brown University on November 23.
