PROVIDENCE, RI (November 23, 2024) - Day one of the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition at Brown University saw the Tufts University women's fencing team win four of their six contests.
After a 20-7 loss to Boston College to begin the day, the Jumbos had back-to-back wins over Wheaton College (MA) by a 25-2 score and Wayne State University in an 18-9 margin. The Jumbos then lost to the host Bears 20-7, but finished the day with victories over Vassar College (18-9) and Brandeis University (14-13).
Wayne State was a guest team for the conference meet and does not count towards conference competition. Tufts was 3-2 in NFC action on Saturday.
The victory over Brandeis stood out, as the Judges were ranked third in the US Fencing Coaches Association Preseason Poll and Tufts was #5. A 6-3 victory in epee led Tufts, as
Karen Bei won all three of her bouts and
Ayelet Book won twice. Two wins by
Lea Levi in foil and two from
Nitika Subramanian in saber also helped the cause.
In an 18-9 victory against Vassar, the Jumbos received perfect 3-0 records from Levi in foil, Bei in epee and
Anahat Bawa in saber. Meanwhile, Guan in foil and Bei in epee had winning marks in the loss to BC.
With 32 wins on the day saber had the most success for Tufts. They received contributions from five individuals, including an 8-4 mak (.667) by Bawa. Subramanian had eight wins and
Anat Katz added seven in the saber weapon.
Bei's 15 wins in 18 epee bouts (.833) was the best individual performance from the Jumbos. In foil, Levi finished 12-6 (.667) and Guan was 11-7 (.611).
Brown University will host a second consecutive day of NFC action on Sunday beginning at 10:00 AM.
