PROVIDENCE, RI (November 24, 2024) - On a second consecutive day of Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) action at Brown University, the Jumbo women's team won twice and lost three on Sunday.
Ranked #5 in the US Fencing Coaches Association Presason Poll, the Jumbos lost to #6 Wellesley College and #1 MIT by identical 16-11 scores to start the day. Another setback to #7 Denison University (15-12) preceded victories over Wagner College by a 16-11 score and Sacred Heart University with a 20-7 score.
Denison was a guest team at the NFC meet, therefore that result does not count towards the conference record. Tufts split its four NFC matches on Sunday to go to 5-4 in the conference overall.
In the victory over Wagner, Tufts had 7-2 records in foil and saber.
Lea Levi in foil won all three of her bouts, while
Saanvi Kapoor and
Sophie Guan both won twice.
Nitika Subramanian,
Olympe Jean and
Millie Girardi each won twice in saber versus Wagner.
The Jumbos won all three weapon groups in the victory over Sacred Heart. Guan in foil,
Karen Bei in epee and Jean in saber all had 3-0 records.
Highlights from the losses include two wins each by Levi in foil, Bei in epee and
Anat Katz and
Anahat Bawa in saber versus Wellesley. The Jumbos won saber 6-3 in that contest. Levi was 3-0 in foil against MIT, while Guan won twice helping Tufts win 6-3 in that weapon category. Bei had three wins in epee, while Bawa took two in saber versus MIT. A 5-4 win in foil over Denison featured two wins by Kapoor and Guan. Bei in epee and Jean in saber also won twice.
Bei continued to win regularly, leading Tufts with a 12-3 mark (.800) on Sunday. Levi was excellent in foil at 10-3 (.769), while Guan won two-thirds of her matches (10-5). A 7-2 mark (.778) by Jean led the Jumbos in saber, where all five who fenced had winning records.Â
Tufts will conclude its first semester of action at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, December 8.
