BOSTON, MA (December 3, 2024) -- Senior guard
Sofia Gonzalez led the Tufts University women's basketball team with 13 points, as she was one of seven players with six or more points in a solid 70-52 road win at Emmanuel College Tuesday night.
Along with the balanced offensive attack, the Tufts defense was once again strong as it held the host Saints to 52 points, as the Jumbos have not allowed more than 61 points in a game this season. The 45.6 percent shooting on Tuesday as a team for the Jumbos was a season-high, while the seven made three-pointers also matched a 2024-25 high.
The Jumbos got things going early with the game's first five points, starting the contest on a 14-2 run after a triple from Gonzalez with 5:15 left in the first quarter. Emmanuel (3-3) worked its deficit down to six points, before a pair of free throws by junior
Annie Aspesi gave Tufts a 20-12 lead after one.
After shooting 50 percent in the first quarter, Tufts cooled off from the floor but still managed to open up the lead to 14 points thanks to allowing just three made field goals by the Saints in the second stanza as Tufts took a 32-19 lead into halftime.
After the break, Tufts (5-2) took its largest lead of the game of 21 points 4:38 into the second half thanks to a swipe and fast break bucket by senior
Annika Decker. The Jumbo lead would swell up to as much as 22 early in the fourth quarter, as Tufts cruised to its second straight victory while moving to 2-0 on the road.
Gonzalez was a very efficient shooter on Tuesday night, going 4-of-6 overall and 3-of-4 from deep in addition to adding four assists. Junior
Sarah Crossett posted nine points in 18 minutes, making four of her six field goals, and first-year
Monet Witherspoon finished with eight points and a team-high five rebounds.
Junior Sophia Davvis tallied eight points and four caroms in 17 minutes of play, and Aspesi recorded eight points off the bench for Tufts. Sophomore
Annie Ryan also went 3-of-6 for seven points, and
Mikayla Paquette was 3-of-4 for six points in five minutes. Decker posted a season-high six assists, and first-year
Abi Stone recorded her first collegiate point with a free throw in the fourth quarter.
Emmanuel got 10 points apiece from Kaitlyn Bartash and Tiffany Fischer, and Tye Blye also had eight points in the loss. EC shot 37.7 percent from the floor, making a strong 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from behind the arc.
Tufts will return to action Thursday night in more local non-conference play, battling MIT at 7 p.m. in Cambridge, MA at the Rockwell Cage.
