WALTHAM, MA (December 8, 2024) - The Tufts University women's fencing team competed at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday and split their four matches.
After losses to a pair of Division I teams - #9 Cornell University (22-5 score) and #12 Penn State University (17-10) - the Jumbos earned a pair of victories versus Division III opponents. Tufts topped #8 Drew University 20-7 and won 24-3 over Lawrence University. The brown and blue are 13-16 overall record heading into semester break.
In the loss to Cornell which opened Tufts' action today, three of the points came from the Jumbos' saber group with wins by
Nitika Subramanian,
Anat Katz and
Olympe Jean. Tufts then won epee versus Penn State 6-3 including a 3-0 record by
Karen Bei.
The win against Drew University saw 3-0 foil marks by Jumbos
Saanvi Kapoor and
Lea Levi, as well as from Bei in epee. Subramanian and
Millie Girardi in saber were each 2-0 in the match, while
Anahat Bawa in saber and
Ayelet Book in epee had 2-1 records versus the Rangers.
Tufts dominated over Lawrence, including a 9-0 record in saber. Girardi led there with a 3-0 mark. Kapoor and
Sophie Guan were both unbeaten (3-0) in foil, as was Bei in epee. Katz and Bawa both went 2-0 in saber, while Levi in foil and
Mikayla Joseph in epee both won two out of three.
The Jumbo saber crew led Tufts overall today with a 21-15 record. Girardi's 6-2 mark (.750) led the way while Subramanian was 5-4 (.556). Bei's 10-2 record (.833) in epee led the Jumbos to a 20-16 record in that weapon, where Book also won four out of five overall. Levi was the top winner in foil at 7-5 (.583) while Kapoor had six wins as the foil group was even at 18-18.
The Jumbos will host next time they are in action with the Tufts Invitational on January 12.
