HARTFORD, CT (February 10, 2024) -- The Tufts University women's basketball dropped its 2023-24 regular season finale on the road Saturday afternoon at Trinity College, falling to the host Bantams 57-30 in conference action from Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
Despite the loss, the Jumbos (11-12, 3-7 New England Small College Athletic Conference) earned a spot in the conference tournament next weekend as the No. 8 seed, heading to Bowdoin College Saturday, February 17 at 3 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine. The Jumbos will look to straighten out the ship after a six-game skid to end the season.
The offensive production never came on Saturday for the Jumbos, despite holding the high-powered Bantam (18-6, 8-2 NESCAC) squad to only 57 points in the game. Tufts went a combined 2-for-26 in the first and third quarters, as Tufts didn't get on the board in the contest until four seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a bucket from senior
Mallory Folliard. In the second quarter Tufts pulled to within nine at 16-7 after a free throw by first-year
Stella Galanes, but Trinity stormed back to take a 31-14 edge into the break.
Tufts allowed just eight points in the third quarter, but couldn't make up ground on the Bantams as the Jumbos dropped the road game. The 30 points scored was the fewest for a Tufts' squad since falling 52-29 in the 2017 Division III NCAA Championship game to Amherst College.
Senior
Maggie Russell finished with a team-high 12 points and 13 rebounds, and moved into the No. 2 spot on the all-time scoring list at Tufts with 1443 points. She passed Colleen Hart '11 with 1422 points points in her career. Galanes added nine points as well off the bench, and sophomore
Sophia Davis also finished with six rebounds and four points for the Jumbos, who finished 8-of-51 (15.7 percent) from the floor.
Bria Fuller posted 12 points and five rebounds in the victory, while Emma Wax tallied 12 points and eight boards in the Bantam victory. Reilly Campbell also had 11 points in the victory, as Trinity shot 42.6 percent (23-54) on field goal attempts Saturday.
The official NESCAC Tournament bracket will be released on Sunday afternoon.
