No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer Takes Both Ends Of Doubleheader With Baseball Sunday

CLAREMONT, CA (March 17, 2024) -- The Tufts University baseball team was looking for a series win over No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer Sunday, but the host Sagehens were able to get the offense going as they took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Alumni Field Sunday with scores of 10-0 and 13-2 in a pair of seven-inning games.

Game 1: Pomona-Pitzer 10, Tufts 0
The host Sagehens (16-5) pounded out 14 hits in game one, while Hannoh Seo tossed six scoreless innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.

PP scored two runs in the first inning, and tacked on a single run in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Jumbos best chance to score came in the top of the fifth, as Connor Flavin walked followed by a Malcolm Whitfield double to put runners at second and third but Seo got the final out of the frame on a strikeout to end the threat.

The Jumbos finished with just three hits, as Whitfield was 1-for-2 with a double while Ben Leonard and Owen McKiernan added a hit and stolen base apiece. Silas Reed allowed three earned on seven hits over four innings, striking out three in his third start of the season.

Nate Jakobs was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a homer for the Sagehens, while William Kinney also tallied three hits in four at-bats in game one.

Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 13, Tufts 2
Whitfield connected on his first career home run for the Jumbos in game two, but Issac Kim launched a pair of three-run shots to power Pomona-Pitzer to the victory. In all, the Sagehens connected on three homers, finishing with 16 total hits.

PP led 9-0 after two innings, as Kim connected for his two homers in his first two at-bats while Tanner DeGrazia also hit a two-run long ball. Whitfield would bring the Jumbos to within seven in the third inning, as he launched a ball over the tall right-field wall for his first career homer to score Connor Brala

That would be all the offense that the Jumbos would get though, as PP pushed across a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the doubleheader sweep.

McKiernan had another strong game, as he went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, and is now leading the team with a .474 average while going a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. Jesse McCullough was 1-for-2 with a walk and stolen base as well.

Sophomore Charlie Biskupiak worked three innings of relief on the mound, allowing four hits and two earned runs in his first collegiate outing.

Kim finished 4-for-5 with eight RBI for the Sagehens in game two, while Greg Pierantoni and JC Ng each had three hits apiece in the win. Eamonn Woods got the win, tossing three scoreless innings of relief while surrendering two hits.

The Jumbos (4-4) will return to the diamond on Monday at 3 PM local time in La Verne, CA, taking on No. 14 University of La Verne in more non-conference, spring break play.
