Tufts Finishes Spring Break With Win Over No. 15 JHU, 7-2

CLAREMONT, CA (March 21, 2024) -- The Tufts University men's tennis squad, currently ranked No. 5 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, had no problems in its final match of Spring Break as it knocked off No. 15 Johns Hopkins University 7-2 in non-conference action from Biszantz Family Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. 

The Jumbos took a 2-1 lead into singles play after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, as Derin Acaroglu and Lachie Macintosh earned an 8-3 win at the second spot over Pranav Gadiraju and Hanyu Liu. The pair is now 4-1 together on the season, including going 4-0 in dual matches this season. 

Sacha Maes and Corey Marley stayed undefeated on the campaign, moving to 4-0 together with an 8-4 win over Joshua Kim and Allen Gong. Daniel Ardila and Marco Azar were able to knock off Vuk Vuksanovic and Alex Ganchev at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. 

In singles play, Tufts earned five victories in the six matches with three coming in straight sets. Vuksanovic got back into the win column with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gong at No. 1 singles, while Javier Gonzalez won his second straight with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position. 

Macintosh upped his record on the season to 8-5, posting a straight set win at No. 3 singles, and doubles partner Acaroglu shook off a rally by Liu to earn his eighth win of the year with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Sophomore Andrej Djokic drew back into the lineup at No. 6 Thursday, and won his third straight with a 7-5, 6-2 win. 

The Jumbos will head back East and will have nine days off before hosting Bates College on the brand-new Voute Courts Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. Later that day, Tufts will head to Cambridge to take on Division I Harvard University at 6 p.m.
