Men's Tennis Sweeps Bates; Falls To Division I Harvard Saturday

MEDFORD, MA (March 30, 2024) -- The Tufts University men's tennis team returned home after a long spring break trip to play their first home match of the 2023-24 season, knocking off Bates College 9-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Saturday morning. Later in the day, Tufts traveled to Cambridge to take on Division I Harvard University, falling 6-0.at the Murr Center. 

Match 1: Tufts 9, Bates 0
The Jumbos wasted no time asserting their dominance in the doubles competition. The duo of Alex Ganchev and Vuk Vuksanovic set the tone with a decisive 8-3 victory over Bates' Alexander Gujarathi and Theo Sardain.

The momentum continued as Derin Acaroglu and Lachie Macintosh fought hard to clinch a thrilling 8-7 (7-0) win against Phillippe Kosyagin and Matthew Danielson. Sacha Maes and Corey Marley sealed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 triumph over Evangelo Kapothanasis and Ben Adey.

Entering singles play with a commanding lead, Tufts remained relentless. Vuk Vuksanovic showcased his skill with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alexander Gujarathi in the top singles position. Javier Gonzalez followed suit with a dominant performance, defeating Matthew Danielson with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2.

The Jumbos continued to excel across the board in singles competition. Alex Ganchev displayed his prowess with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Theo Sardain. Garv Bahl delivered a flawless performance, conceding no games in his 6-0, 6-0 victory against Nicky Desai.

Andrej Djokic maintained Tufts' momentum with a well-fought 6-4, 6-1 win over Alex Park, while Sacha Maes rounded off the day with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory against Nico Ozer.

Match 2: Harvard 6, Tufts 0
Harvard wasted no time in asserting their depth in the doubles competition. The formidable duo of Daniel Milavsky and Cooper Williams set the tone with a convincing 6-3 victory over Vuk Vuksanovic and Javier Gonzalez of Tufts.

Alan Yim and David Lins continued Harvard's momentum, clinching a hard-fought 6-4 win against Derin Acaroglu and Lachie Macintosh in the No. 2 doubles position. Melchior Delloye and Masato Perara sealed the doubles point with a solid 6-2 triumph over Alex Ganchev and Garv Bahl, giving Harvard a lead heading into singles play.

In singles competition, Masato Perara showcased his skill with a flawless performance, defeating Javier Gonzalez of Tufts with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Valdemar Pape extended Harvard's lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lachie Macintosh, further solidifying their position.

Alan Yim secured another point for Harvard with a strong 6-4, 6-2 win against Derin Acaroglu, showcasing Harvard's depth and talent across the lineup. David Lins continued Harvard's winning streak with a composed performance, defeating Alex Ganchev of Tufts with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4.

In the sixth singles position, James MacDonald engaged in a fierce battle against Garv Bahl of Tufts. The match went into a third-set tiebreaker, where MacDonald displayed resilience and determination to clinch a hard-fought 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (15-13) victory, sealing Harvard's comprehensive 6-0 triumph.

Tufts will have the week off before heading to No. 47 Wesleyan University Saturday, April 6 at 2 p.m. for NESCAC play in Middletown, CT.
