Defensive Unit Stifles No. 15 Stevens In 20-7 Men's Lacrosse Win

HOBOKEN, NJ (March 23, 2024) -- The No. 3 Tufts University men's lacrosse team forced 27 turnovers and held No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology without a goal in six extra-man chances in powering past the host Ducks 20-7 in non-conference play from DeBaun Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon in New Jersey.

The game was sloppy for the majority of the game due to the heavy rain throughout the contest, but Tufts (5-1) used it to their advantage while also showcasing their depth throughout the lineup. Tufts saw 17 different players get onto the score sheet on Saturday, led by the four points apiece by sophomores Brooks Hauser and Jack Regnery along with junior Max Ettinghausen

The Jumbos took an early 3-0 on goals from Charlie Tagliaferri and Ettinghausen, but Stevens (7-2) rattled off two goals to finish off the first quarter. Tufts put together another three-goal run early in the second frame, thanks to goals from Joey Kraft, Hauser and Regnery to take a 6-2 lead. After Stevens got a goal from Joseph Grippo to make it 6-3, Tufts finished the half with goals from Ettinghausen and Garrett Kelly to make it 8-3 at the break.

The second half saw the Tufts run continue as Tagliaferri and Regnery tallied to start a 7-2 run in the third quarter that finished in a 15-5 lead for the Jumbos. The 8-0 run over the third and fourth quarter also saw the first collegiate tallies for Logan Lee, Jordan Ito and Peter Kraemer as the Jumbos led by as many as 15 at 20-5 before earning the 13-goal victory.

Defensively, the Jumbos got another great game from Michael Ayers who tallied six ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist, while Ben Frisoli finished with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior defender George Panagopoulos also forced two turnovers, and Joey Waldbaum chalked up three ground balls in addition to his one caused turnover. Tufts won the ground ball count 48-41 on the day, as Parker Merril dominated at the "X" winning 10-of-12 face-offs while adding 10 loose ball pick-ups.

On the offensive end, Regnery scored four goals on a team-high 12 shots, while Hauser finished with three goals and three ground balls. Ettinghausen had two goals and two assists, Tagliaferri posted two goals and Kelly also chalked up a goal and an assist.

Tufts outshot its hosts 67-34 Saturday, including a 36-19 edge in shots on goal, while posting a 19-12 edge in face-offs won as well. Connor Garzone played 47 minutes in net, making six saves while Ben Friedman and Will Anderson played the final 12 minutes as each allowed one goal and stopped three shots apiece.

Matthew Pergola led Stevens with three points on two goals and an assist, and Grippo and Jack Savarese each added two goals as well for the Ducks. Kevin Holtby stopped 15 shots as well, while Luke Lesizza and Jackson Nieman each caused three turnovers for the hosts.

Tufts will be back on Bello Field on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., taking on Liberty League foe and No. 8 Union College in a big non-conference tilt.
