Baseball Falls to UMass Boston 6-3 Wednesday Afternoon

MEDFORD, MA (March 27, 2024) - The Tufts University baseball team played against UMass Boston Wednesday afternoon at Sol Gittleman Park after spending all of last week in California for spring break games. The Beacons bested the Jumbos 6-3.

The Jumbos (7-7) gave the ball to first-year Michael O'Brien to start the game. In the top of the first inning, the Beacons scored two runs quickly to take a 2-0 lead over the Jumbos. The Jumbos would cut the Beacon's lead to one in the bottom half of the inning as first-year Malachi Pena drove home junior Henry Fleckner who hit a double then was advanced to third earlier in the inning.

The Beacons added another run in the top of the second to extend their lead back to two runs. The Jumbos would not get back on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning when Pena scored Fleckner again on an RBI single to left to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Beacons.

In the top of the seventh, the Beacons would add another run as Aiden Blake hit the only home run of the game that was a long fly ball to left center to make the score 5-2. In the bottom of the seventh the Jumbos would bring home their last run of the game as sophomore Jesse McCullough hit an RBI double down the left field line that scored senior Patrick Solomon. The Beacons would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth to make the score 6-3.

In the game, the Jumbos used nine pitchers, they combined for six strikeouts and left ten Beacon batters stranded. Pena finished the game going 2-4 with two RBIs. The Jumbos had five hits on the day along with four errors.

Up next for the Jumbos they will head to Brunswick Maine to start NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) to play against foe Bowdoin College. The first game will be played on Friday, March 29, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 P.M.
