MEDFORD, MA (March 30, 2024) -- The No. 24 Tufts University women's tennis team used their momentum from Friday's thrilling comeback win over Babson College as the Jumbos bested No. 42 Bates College 9-0 Saturday inside Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.
The match was slated to be played outside but the wind chill and sustained winds moved the match into the climate controlled Gantcher Center. That didn't stop the Jumbos from putting the Bobcats (3-7, 1-3 NESCAC) out in the cold, as Tufts (4-5, 1-2 NESCAC) rolled in doubles to earn a sweep of pairs' play.
Zoe Kava and
Rebecca Lim earned an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles to put the Jumbos up 1-0, followed quickly thereafter by an 8-1 win by
Stephanie Woodbury and
Natalie Hu at the No. 2 spot.
In the final doubles' match,
Steffy Jullian and
Sophie Wax helped clinch the sweep with an 8-3 victory. It was the tandem's third straight win together this spring.
In singles' action, Hu earned the fourth point for the Jumbos with a quick 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position over Lizzie Frekko, and
Rebecca Lim chalked up her team-leading sixth win of the spring to clinch the team win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
The wins' kept coming at No. 1 singles, as Kava earned a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win over Ally Friedman of Bates. Wax won her third straight match with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, and Jullian picked up her second win of the weekend with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles to put Tufts up 8-0. The final singles match would be the closet of the day, but Tufts' sophomore
Nikki Kintiroglou recorded a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory.
Tufts will now head out on the road next weekend in NESCAC action, taking on Wesleyan University Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. in Middletown, CT.
