MEDFORD, MA (April 13, 2024) - The No. 18 ranked Tufts University women's tennis team played their first outdoor match at home on Voute Courts on the campus of Tufts University. The Jumbos faced off against No. 31 Colby College in a 5-4 Jumbos victory that came down to the final singles match.
The Jumbos went 2-1 on the day in doubles competition as junior
Sophie Wax and sophomore
Steffy Jullian defeated Amelie Gal and Ellie Gershaw 8-6. Freshman
Natalie Hu and sophomore
Stephanie Woodbury defeated Isabella Suk and Michaela Landry 6-8 at the No. 2 doubles. The last to finish was the senior duo of
Zoe Kava and
Rebecca Lim, they were defeated in a tiebreaker by Sydney Landau and Sam Riordan 7-8 (2).
In singles action, Hu defeated Suk 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles match to put the Jumbos up 3-1 in the competition. The Jumbos would get more help as sophomore
Lucy Mitchell defeated Jade Finestone 6-0, 6-2.
The Mules would answer the Jumbos by winning the next three singles matches. At the No. 2 singles, Lim was defeated by Landau 4-6, 3-6. At the No. 3 singles, Wax was bested by Ellie Gershaw 2-6, 6-7 (6). At the No. 6 singles, Jullian was defeated in a hard-fought three-set match by Landry 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.
With the competition tied at four, it was up to Kava to get a victory. Kava faced-off against Riordan. Kava dropped the first set 3-6, then defeated Riordan in a tiebreaker in the second set 7-6 (1), and she went on to best defeat Riordan in the third set 6-2 and give the Jumbos a 5-4 victory.
Up next the Jumbos women's tennis team will square off against Bowdoin College tomorrow April, 14 at home on Voute Courts. The Match will begin at 2 PM.
