BRUNSWICK, ME (April 14, 2024) - The Tufts University men's baseball team played their fourth straight game in three days as they traveled to Bowdoin College to make up a game with the Polar Bears that was postponed on March 29.
The Jumbos (13-13) gave the ball to first-year Matt Hirsch. Hirsch pitched two innings throwing 30 pitches and walking two batters. The Jumbos offense started off strong posting three runs in the top of the second inning as they took a 3 -0 lead over the Polar Bears.
In the top of the second inning, junior Cooper Smith led off with a single then grad student Conner Flavin reached base on a fielder's choice and Smith advanced to third on an error by the Polar Bears on the same play. Senior Ozzie Fleischer up next would advance Flavin to second on a sacrifice bunt.
With runners on second and third sophomore Malcolm Whitfield would bring Flavin and Smith home on a 2 RBI single to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Jumbos weren't finished scoring in the top of the inning as junior Henry Fleckner hit an RBI single that scored senior Patrick Solomon from third to give the Jumbos a 3-0 lead. Solomon earlier in the inning forced a walk then sophomore Jesse McCullough would advance him to third with a single.
The Polar Bears would answer the Jumbos in the bottom half of the third as they scored four runs to take the lead 4-3. The Polar Bears scored all their runs on RBI singles in the inning.
The Polar Bears would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-3. The Jumbos ran into some good pitching from the Polar Bears as they were held to one hit after the Jumbos three run inning in the second inning.
Up next the Jumbos will travel to Babson College to face off against the Beavers in non-conference action Wednesday, April 17, first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
