Johnson, DiCocco Lead Softball's NESCAC Sweep at Amherst College

AMHERST, MA (April 6, 2024) - In a dominant Tufts pitching performance, junior Sky Johnson threw a three-hit shutout in game one and then senior Sophia DiCocco pitched a one-hit shutout in the five-inning second game as the Jumbo softball team swept a double-header at Amherst College 4-0 and 12-0 on Saturday.

Head coach Lauren Ebstein's team lowered its earned run average to 0.95 with the pair of shutouts. While allowing just four hits, the Jumbos had 26 hits of their own in the two games led by six from sophomore Kaitlyn Perucci.

Tufts improves to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Amherst drops to 4-11 and 1-3 NESCAC.

Tufts 4, Amherst 0

Johnson retired the last 17 batters she face in the first game. The only inning she was in any danger was the second, when Amherst's Emma Nordstrom and Sadie Pool singled with one out. However, Johnson K'd the next two batters to silence the threat. She struck out eight overall.

Junior catcher Keriann Slayton paced the Jumbos offensively. She led off the top of the second with her first home run of the season to left giving Tufts a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, still a 1-0 game, Jumbo sophomore Lauryn  Horita doubled on a full count. Slayton then traded places with her on a double just inside the foul line deep to left field for a 2-0 Tufts lead. Slayton would later score on a wild pitch, and Bela Jimenez - who had walked - came home on a single through the left side by Michelle Adelman.

Slayton finished 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbis, while Perucci also had two hits for Tufts. The Jumbos had 10 hits overall.

Pool was 2 for 2 for the Mammoths. Annalise Knop took the pitching loss, giving up nine hits and four runs in six innings.

Tufts 12, Amherst 0 (5 inn.)

A single by Pool with two outs in the fourth inning was the only hit allowed by DiCocco. She also walked two while striking out three in her outing.

Tufts' 16 hits were its most of the season, with Perucci (4 for 4, 2 runs, 4 rbis), Adelman (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 rbis) and Rachel Moore (3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 rbis) leading the way.

Perucci got the Jumbos started offensively with a two-run single in the top of the second. Horita then continued with her hot bat, hitting a two-run home run to center in the third inning. Tufts would score five times overall in the third, with a two-run single by Adelman and an rbi base hit from Moore making it 7-0.

Tufts would earn the run-rule win after scoring five more in the fifth inning. Moore singled home a run again, then Josie Steinberg hit a two-run single. Perucci capped the offensive explosion with a two-run home run for a 12-0 Tufts lead.
