CLINTON, NY (April 7, 2024) - Tufts University scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2 to earn a 4-2 come-from-behind win which gave the Jumbos a sweep of a NESCAC Softball double-header at Hamilton College on Sunday.
Down 2-1 entering the seventh in Game 2, Tufts first-year
Heaven Oliva tied the game with her first collegiate home run.
Rachel Moore later doubled home a run and
Josie Steinberg hit an rbi single.
Sophia DiCocco came on for the final three outs and earned her second save.
Tufts had won the first game 3-1 behind the three-hit pithing of junior
Sky Johnson.
Tufts 3, Hamilton 1
Johnson battled Hamilton's Teagan Graham in the circle. Tufts struck first in the second inning with back-to-back doubles by
Haley Leimbach and
Bela Jimenez.
The visitors would add two more runs in the third inning. Moore led off with her third triple of the season and would score on a Hamilton error. The other run was produced on a ground out by
Kaitlyn Perucci scoring
Josie Steinberg, who had walked and advanced on the error.
Meanwhile, Johnson allowed only an unearned run in her seven innings while strikeout out six. She lowered her earned run average to 0.58 for the season.
Hamilton scored its run in the fifth when Natalie Beebe led off with a single. Pinch-runner Sofia Santanta would score on a pair of Tufts errors after she had stolen second base.
Keriann Slayton finished with two hits and a walk for Tufts. Moore walked twice to go with her triple.
Graham gave up eight hits and two earned runs while taking the loss for Hamilton.
Tufts 4, Hamilton 2
Before the comeback, Tufts had trailed 1-0 and 2-1. Hamilton scored first in the third inning when Ella Heftved doubled to right-center and scored unearned on an error during an field single by Tansky.
Tufts got a good start from sophomore pitcher
Claire Guitmann, who went six innings giving up five hits and two runs, though none earned. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
The Jumbos tied the game with one in the fourth, also provided by Oliva. She singled with two outs to score Slayton, who had reached on a fielder's choice and took second on a wild pitch.
Guitmann would strand Alison Zorn on second after she hit a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Continentals would take the lead 2-1 aided by another Jumbo miscue in the fifth. Jordan Merklin reached first on an error and scored when Alexis Mayer doubled. However, Guitmann got a pop-up for the third out to leave Mayer at second.
Pitching for Hamilton, Tansky had retired eight straight Jumbos when Oliva came to the plate in the top of the seventh. She homered to center tying the game at 2-2. Then with two outs,
Michelle Adelman singled, Moore doubled her home, and then Steinberg plated Moore with a single to put Tufts up 4-2.
DiCocco gave up a two-out infield single to Tansky in the bottom of the seventh before getting the final out on a line drive to Moore.
Guitmann earned the win for Tufts, improving to 3-0. Oliva finished 2 for 3 with two rbis and a run, while Steinberg was 2 for 4 with the rbi.
Tansky allowed nine hits and four runs in her seven innings. Zorn and Tansky both had two hits for the Continentals.
