Tufts Takes Men's Points Trophy at New England Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, MA (May 4, 2024) - The Tufts University Men's Rowing Team won the Points Trophy at the 2024 New England Rowing Championships on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond. Representing the most widespread success at the regatta, the Points Trophy score is from all races with Tufts topping the list at 84.00 points. Second-place Wesleyan was right behind with 83.80 points.

The Jumbos won New England championships in the second, third and fourth varsity competitions on Saturday.

The Jumbos were fourth in a very close first varsity competition. In a thrilling race this morning, Tufts edged Williams College by the narrowest of margins in the third heat. In a photo finish Tufts' time was 5:57.269 to Williams' 5:57.353. Then in an extremely competitive grand final this afternoon, #1-in-Division III Wesleyan University won in a 5:57.585 time, Division I MIT was second in 5:58.877, and #2-ranked Trinity College (5:59.337) was third in front of #3 Tufts' 6:01.565 finish. The Tufts 1V8 team featured coxswain Aidan Keusch, Peter Conard, Max Landers, Liam Jenkins, Ryan Hankins, Nick Kuranda, Max Nusbaum, John Griffin and Miles Smith.

Tufts won a dramatic second varsity grand final to highlight its day. The #2-ranked second varsity in the nation this week, Tufts went down to the wire with top-ranked Williams College and defeated the Ephs with a 6:09.268 time to 6:10.580 (a winning margin of 1.312 seconds). Third-ranked Wesleyan was a close third in the GF (6:12.604). The Jumbos had won their heat in 6:10.120, ahead of Wesleyan's 6:12.692 mark. Coxswain Jamie Forman, Patrick Moran, Maxwell Rosenberger, Mark Machle, Peter McCormick, Xander Mesires, JT Machle, Seamus Ruiseal and Corbin Steck were the Jumbo 2V8.

The first boat into the water for Tufts this morning was the third varsity. The Jumbos won their five-team first heat with a 6:24.481 time ahead of Trinity College (6:28.331). In the grand final, Tufts won its New England title with a 6:16.970 finish that beat Wesleyan (6:21.646) and Bates College (6:22.790). The championship M3V8 line-up for Tufts was coxswain Lucas Resnik, Justin Sun, Henry Gray, Chris Millay, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Fritz Oldenburg, Roan Dalton, Alex Flynn and Hayden Stone.

Tufts had two eights in the men's fourth varsity straight final, and they were the two fastest. The Jumbo 4V8 - coxswain Whitney Critchfield, Charlie Guerra, Peter Battle, Nathan Henderson, Alden Taylor, Eric Rohloff, Abe Nelson, Robert Arsenault and George Lakis - won the grand final in a 6:17.746 time. Tufts' 5V8 rowed 6:21.476 and edged Wesleyan University (6:22.596) for the silver. Tufts' 5V8 had coxswain Lexi Acosta, Jack Donovan, Aleksi Sefanov, Ethan Seidner, Saul Meacham, Colin Cooper, Dominic Svagdis, Griffin Hardy and Brendan McHugh. It's the second straight year that Tufts has been New England's top team in the 4V8.

Tufts was also first in the Combined Team Point Standings with a 171.10 score, well ahead of second-place Wesleyan (155.10).

The Jumbos will see many of these same opponents next Sunday (May 12) at the National Invitational Rowing Championships, which includes the NESCAC Championship, back on Lake Quinsigamond.
