Andy McLaughlin,
Peter Malinovsky and Jacob Welborn under head coach
George Munger have been named as the Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year by the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA) for the 2024 season.
Candidates for the Coaching Staff of the Year award are nominated by the head coach and voted on by the IRCA membership. The award recognizes the outstanding work done by the assistant coaches, volunteer coaches, boatmen, etc. from each division in service to their team and in support of the head coach.
The large Tufts squad saw success across all five of its boats during the spring season. In addition to Tufts' national runner-up performance at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Division III Championship based upon the combined performances of the first and second varsities, the Jumbos also had their third, fourth and fifth eights go undefeated during the regular-season against the likes of Wesleyan University, Williams College, Trinity College, Bates College and more.
At the New England Rowing Championships (NERC), Tufts won the third varsity championship and went 1-2 in the fouth varsity race. Also winners in the second varsity competition, the Jumbos won the overall Points Trophy at NERC. In the National Invitational Rowing Championship, Tufts won the second, third and fourth varsity races leading to a second-place Points Trophy finish.
"Our coaching staff has done an exceptional job with our lower boats this year," Coach Munger said. "The quality of teaching and preparation that has gone into our third, fourth and fifth eights is so clear. Those boats were undefeated through the spring season, and were a huge reason why the first and second boats moved well. Our top eights are filled with guys who have spent time in the third and fourth boats, which is a real testament to the thought and care put into it by Andy, Pete and Jacob."
