MEDFORD, MA (September 27, 2024) -- The Tufts University men's tennis squad hosted the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals opening day of action Friday, as the Jumbos saw a ton of success with multiple players continuing in the singles and doubles' draws.
Play started in doubles Friday morning, and Tufts saw all four pairs move into Saturday's Round of 16.
Lachie Macintosh and first-year partner
Nico Tremblay opened the day with an 8-2 win over Ben Bonetto and Brendan Love of Coast Guard Academy in the Round of 64, and the knocked off the seeded duo of Alex Merson and Edward Wang of Babson College 8-7 (3).
Junior
Javier Gonzalez and first-year
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis also won both of their matches, starting first with an 8-2 win over Reif Larsen and Sidney Huet of Middlebury College. The pair then dispatched of seeded Pieter Breuker and Kiran Garapati of Bowdoin College 8-7 (10).
Play was also contested at MIT on Friday, and the No. 8 seed of
Alex Ganchev and
Sacha Maes opened with a bye and then bested Eric Diop and Tylan Ozkuzey of Bates College, 8-3 to move into the Round of 16. The No. 2 seed pair of
Vuk Vuksanovic and
Derin Acaroglu earned a bye into the second round, but then posted an 8-1 win over Karl ROmer and Rodrigo Torres of University of St. Joseph.
All four duos will restart play at 9 a.m.
In the singles' bracket, top-seed Vuksanovic posted a 7-5, 6-1 win in the first round over Alex Merson of Babson College, and then swept Wheaton College's Jamie Subirana, 6-0, 6-0. He wil take on Middlebury's Nikky Kondamuri Saturday.
MacIntosh, also seeded in the draw, bested Jeff Bodner of Gordon College 6-2, 6-1 in the first round followed by a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Aldiyar Abzhan of Amherst College in the second round. MacIntosh will take on No. 5 seed Noah Laber Saturday in the Round of 16. Gonzalez was a double winner on Friday as well, as the No. 4 seed bested Conrad Kadel 6-1, 6-2 before knocking off Hugh Hentschel 6-4, 6-4.
Ganchev started his day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over George Danes of Endicott Colllege, and then topped seeded Shawn Berdia of Williams College 6-0, 6-3 to move into the Round of 16. Senior
Derin Acaroglu knocked off MIT's Adam Sun 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, and then took out the No. 2 seed in the draw Dylan Walters of Brandeis University 6-2, 7-5.
Maes won his first round match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 over Harry Collomb of Wesleyan University, but fell in the second round to Bowdoin's Mark Kneiss 6-3, 6-4.
In the "B" singles' draw, Tremblay was an 8-2 winner over Brandon Felcher of Trinity College before defeating Aidan Wang-Fang of Brandeis. Mastrogamvrakis outlasted Huet from Middlebury 8-7 (5) in the first round of the "B" singles draw, but would fall in the second round to Sujit Cepuri of Amherst College 8-7 (5). No. 2 seed in the "B" draw
Andrej Djokic earned a bye in the opening round before besting Ben Kotzen of Brandeis in the second round.
Action continues on Saturday at Tufts University at 9 a.m.
