MALDEN, MA (January 25, 2025) – Junior goalie Gus Bylin notched his first career shutout with 24 saves as the Tufts University Jumbos shut down 10th-ranked Trinity College 2-0 in a NESCAC men's hockey game Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum.
With the win, the Jumbos ended a five-game winning streak by the Bantams. Tufts improves to 6-8-1 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC, while Trinity drops to 11-4-1 and 7-2-1 in the conference.
The defensive effort went beyond Bylin as Jumbo defensemen
Chris Throndson,
Philippe Lamarre,
Sylas Oberting,
Drew Pitts,
Bryceon Lago,
Maddox Lizotte, and
Jameson Klein combined to shut out Trinity. The Bantams had not been blanked in 15 previous games this year.
The win for Tufts also ends an eight-game losing streak versus Trinity that had dated back to 2021.
The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead on
Max Resnick's goal with just 1:33 remaining in the first period. After a face-off in the Bantam end,
Tyler Sedlak intercepted the puck behind the goal and sent it out to Throndson at the left point. He threw it at the net where Trinity's Devon Bobak made the save. However, Sedlak was able to poke the puck over to Resnick open on the right side and he pushed it in for his eighth goal of the season.
The Jumbos then grabbed a 2-0 lead when
Brendan Fennell, suited up for the first time this year, scored early in the second stanza. He picked up the puck at the Bantam blue line and intended to send a pass to an open
Liam O'Hare at the left post. However, a Trinity defenseman diving through the slot to block the pass instead deflected it into the net at 3:05 of the second period.
Tufts' defense limited Trinity's opportunities through the second and third periods. When they did get a shot on net, Bylin was there to stop it. The Bantams were held to just 13 shots in the second (8) and third periods (5) combined.
Trinity would pull Bobak for the final 1:42, but the Jumbos were able to put the finishing touches on their fine defensive performance. Resnick blocked a shot and Bylin made his final save in the last minute.
Tufts will look to build on this momentum when they head back out on the road next weekend for games at Middlebury College and Williams College.
