Men's Cross Country Looks to Challenge for NESCAC Title on Saturday

Head coach Jamie Norton's team is ranked #4 in this week's US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III national poll, with rival Williams College close behind at #7. Amherst College, Wesleyan University and Middlebury College are all in the Top 25. Colby College has also been very competitive this season.

At the Connecticut College Invitational featuring several teams in the conference October 18, Tufts was second overall and first among NESCAC teams. Earlier in the season, Williams edged the Jumbos by one point at the Keene State Invitational. Saturday's conference race looks to be a showdown between these two squads with pressure from the previously mentioned teams.

"We need to go out there and execute our race plan and have confidence in our ability," Coach Norton said. "We have to go and be ready to compete hard."

The Jumbos will be aiming for their first NESCAC title since 2012, and their fifth overall. They were fourth in a very tight race last year with a team score of 87, behind Williams (76), Amherst (77) and Middlebury (86).

Probable starters for Tufts on Saturday will be Amokrane Aouchiche, Luke Brennan, Calvin Cummings, Simon Donovan, Gabe Grove, Harris Gulbransen, Quinn Hampson, Meba Henok, Chris Hovet, Sam Kurian, Cullen McCaleb, Jack Moretta, Will Olsen, Jonah Reisner and Avery Smart. On hand as alternates will be Charlie Krebs, Ben Hester and Chris Barbato.

Norton and his staff would also like to see some of the team's top competitors challenge for the individual conference title. That has only been captured once by a Jumbo - Tim Nichols in 2016. The top 14 finishers in Saturday's race will earn NESCAC All-Conference honors (top 7 first team, next seven second team). Brennan, Aouchiche and Cummings were All-NESCAC 2nd teamers a year ago, while Aouchiche was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2022.

The Connecticut College site at Harkness Memorial State Park will host the NESCAC Championship. The men's race begins at 11:00 AM.
