Men's Cross Country Wins NESCAC Title With Team's Lowest Score Ever at Meet

WATERFORD, CT (November 1, 2025) – The Tufts University men's cross country team won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship race on Saturday with an outstanding performance at Harkness State Memorial Park.

Head coach Jamie Norton's squad compiled a team score of 30, well ahead of runner-up Williams College (57) and third-place Amherst College (80). Tufts won its fifth conference championship overall, but first since 2012.

The Jumbos' 30 score is the team's lowest ever at the NESCAC meet, which began in 1983. Today's score also ties for the second-lowest point total of any team in the meet since 1996.

Tufts junior Jonah Reisner was the individual runner-up, finishing the eight-kilometer course in a 24:22.6 PR. Reisner was leading the race at the 4.8K and 5.7K checkpoints, but was edged at the finish line by Williams' Eli Welch (24:20.2). The second-place showing matches Tufts' best at the meet since Tim Nichols won the 2016 conference race.

All of Tufts' scoring five today earned All-Conference honors (top 14). Junior Harris Gulbransen was second for the Jumbos and fourth overall with a 24:30.7 mark. Senior Cullen McCaleb finished in 24:34.8 for sixth place. Running fourth for Tufts was senior Calvin Cummings in seventh place (a 24:35.8 PR), while scoring fifth for the Jumbos was senior Amokrane Aouchiche in 11th-place (24:43.3).

According to Coach Norton, the Jumbos ran a very poised race which started by staying patient behind a fast early pace set by Amherst. Tufts was third at the first two checkpoints, before moving up to second at the 3.2K mark. The Jumbos finished strong, taking over the lead in the second part of the race and winning handily. In particular, McCaleb, who moved up from 12th to sixth over the last portion of the course, and Cummings, who advanced from 14th to seventh, helped seal the victory.

The team will be off next week before heading to the NCAA East Regional Championship in Hopkinton, New Hampshire on November 15.
