As the #1 team in the East Region, Tufts is the favorite to win the program's first Regional title in 20 years. Ultimately, the team is aiming to secure a berth into the NCAA Championship race with a strong showing on Saturday. The winner of the NCAA East Region Championship earns an automatic berth into Nationals, while the other top-finishing squads are considered for at-large berths. The Jumbos have earned four straight team appearances at Nationals with high finishes at the Regional, including second-place efforts in both 2023 and 2024. A Tufts team hasn't won the Regional since 2005.

As previously noted, the Jumbos are currently ranked #1 in the USTFCCA East poll followed by MIT, Bates College, Colby College and WPI. Since the cross country regional alignment was changed in 2021, MIT has won all four East Region championships.

Tufts was first at the NESCAC Championship two weeks ago, compiling the program's lowest score ever at the meet. Fellow East Region affiliates Bowdoin College and Bates were sixth and seventh, respectively, at the conference race. Tufts does not face NESCAC rivals Williams College and Amherst College this weekend, as those teams are in the NCAA Mideast Region.

The Jumbos' projected starting line-up for Saturday is a veteran group with seniors Amokrane Aouchiche, Luke Brennan, Calvin Cummings and Quinn Hampson, and juniors Sam Kurian, Jonah Reisner and Avery Smart. Junior Harris Gulbransen and senior Cullen McCaleb will travel as alternates.

At last year's race, Tufts had all seven of its starters finish in the top 35 individually to earn All-Region recognition. Aouchiche was Tufts' top finisher in sixth last season to receive the third All-Region award of his career. Brennan and Cummings are also three-time All-Region honorees. Hampson has earned All-Region twice, while last year's finish was the first All-Region accomplishment for Gulbransen and Reisner. The Jumbos' five All-Conference honorees this fall - Reisner, Gulbransen, McCaleb, Cummings and Aouchiche - were the team's most since 2003. Director Jamie Norton and his assistants also earned the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year honor.

The back-to-back second-place finishes for Tufts at the Regional are the best for the program since the 2005 victory. This year's squad also has the potential for one of the program's top individual finishes at a Regional race. Tim Nichols won the 2016 Regional and teammate Luke O'Connor was third that year. Ivan Appleton place fifth in 2023.

The highest finishing individuals from non-qualifying teams at the NCAA East Region Championship receive NCAA national berths, but Tufts intends to send a full squad on to Nationals for the fifth straight year and 20th time overall. The NCAA Division III National Championship Race will be held on Saturday, November 22 at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

"We have a lot of momentum coming into this meet and we want to keep that rolling heading into NCAA's," said Coach Norton. "We've earned a lot of confidence and just need to keep our foot on the gas pedal. There are some great teams in our region that are going to give us a very competitive fight and we look forward to the challenge."
