BABSON PARK, MA (November 18, 2025) -- First-year guards
Tessa Lozner and
Abby Congdon each scored career-highs of 18 points, helping the Tufts University women's basketball team to a solid 67-63 road win at Babson College in play from Staake Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
The newcomer duo were two of three players in double-figures for the Jumbos, as junior
Annie Ryan came off the bench to also record a career-high with 14 points.
Tufts trailed early as the host Beavers (2-2) scored the first eight points of the game, leading by as many as 10 in the first quarter with 3:02 left in the frame after a bucket from Emily Flynn. The Jumbos closed the first stanza on a 7-0 run to make it just a three-point Babson lead at 17-14 going to the second stanza.
The Jumbos outscored Babson in the second quarter, getting as close as one at 29-28 after a layup from junior
Stella Galanes before the Beavers eventually led 31-28 at the intermission.
In the second half, Tufts (2-1) took its first lead of the game a minute into the third quarter on a triple from Lozner to put Tufts ahead 32-31. The two squads traded the lead back and forth until a 10-2 run by the Jumbos to finish the third quarter gave Tufts a 50-43 lead going to the final period. Ryan had five of the 10 points during the span, including a layup just before the buzzer.
Babson wouldn't go away, powering back to take a five-point edge with 4:41 to go on a triple by Molly Donovan to make it 61-56 in favor of the hosts. Lozner answered right back with a driving layup, and sophomore
Claire Kolkhorst nailed a triple to deadlock the game at 61 with 3:30 to play.
Congdon made a pair of free throws with just under three minutes to play, and she followed that up with a jumper to put Tufts ahead for good as the Jumbo defensive unit tightened up to secure the win. In the final five minutes, Tufts forced Babson into 0-of-6 shooting, outscoring the Beavers 11-2 in the final 4:41 of the game.
Congdon was 6-of-12 overall from the floor, going 2-of-6 from deep in addition to her four rebounds and two assists. Lozner shot 6-of-13 on field goals, making all but one of her free throws, while Ryan was 6-of-11 and 2-of-5 from three-point land on the night. Sophomore
Siobhan Stapleton played strong defense and led the team with four assists, while senior
Annie Aspesi finished with seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
Tufts shot 41.4 percent overall on the night, making 30.8 percent from three-point land (8-26). Tufts was also a solid 73.3 percent at the line (11-15).
Babson was paced by the game-high 21 points from Flynn, who was 8-of-15 overall including hitting five triples. Samantha Reale also had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Babson, who outrebounded Tufts 42-28.
Tufts will be back in action Friday evening on the road, continuing a seven-game road trip to start the season, taking on Roger Williams University in Bristol, CT at 7 p.m.
