Head coach
Tina Mattera's squad (18-3) advanced to the national final with a 1-0 victory against Christopher Newport University (CNU) in the national semifinals on Friday. The Captains, ranked #1 in the NFHCA poll, had entered the game undefeated. Tufts got a goal from junior
Lilly Ragusa early in the second quarter and shut out CNU for the victory.
The Jumbos will be playing in the NCAA Final for the second straight year, and were also national finalists in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2018. Tufts won the national championship in 2012 with a 2-1 victory against Montclair State University. They have lost the other four times in the final.
Friday's victory against CNU improved the Jumbos' all-time record in NCAA play to 31-14. Tufts is in 16th NCAA appearance overall and earned its seventh berth into the "Final Four" this year.
Johns Hopkins (JHU) earned its spot in the NCAA Final with a 2-1 win over Babson College in two overtimes on Friday. Junior Sophia Albano scored with four minutes left in the second OT to lift the Blue Jays (22-1), who will play in the final for the fourth time.
Now 20-14 overall in NCAA games, JHU is playing in its 15th NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays made three straight national finals from 2021-2023 and are in the Final Four for the sixth time. Head coach Jane Wells' team is seeking the program's first-ever NCAA title.
These are two teams that were glad to see Middlebury College eliminated from the tournament last weekend. All three Hopkins NCAA Championship Game losses were to the Panthers, as were Tufts' in 2018 and 2024. The Jumbos fell to Bowdoin College in 2008 and to Messiah University in 2016. It was the Blue Jays who eliminated Middlebury this season 3-0 in the "Elite 8".
Tufts and Johns Hopkins have met twice before in the NCAA's. In the 2018 national semifinals, the Jumbos won 3-1 in Manhiem, Pennsylvania. The next season, the Blue Jays eliminated the Jumbos in the 2019 Elite 8 2-1 in overtime.
The Jumbos were ranked eighth nationally in goals per game entering Friday, and now have a 3.38 mark. Senior
Hannah Biccard's 16 goals are the most by a Tufts player since 2013. She assisted the Jumbo goal against CNU giving her six on the season and 38 total points. Tufts' shutout on Friday was their seventh of the year and lowered their goals against average to 0.98. Senior All-American
Lydia Eastburn stopped both shots on goal she faced versus CNU and has a .765 save percentage.
JHU was sixth-best defensively in DIII entering the Final Four, now boasting a 0.72 goals against average. Junior goalie Aubrey Kilgore had six saves in the semifinal and carries one of the top marks in Division III with a .865 save percentage. Senior Megan Chang's 28 points (10 goals, eight assists) lead a Blue Jay team that scores 3.09 goals per game.
"It's very exciting," Coach Mattera said after the semifinal game. "We lost six starters from last year. This season has been so fun because we weren't sure what to expect during preseason. We have so much depth and we've played so many people, it's been an amazing team effort. I think we have what it takes to get it done on Sunday."
