USAF ACADEMY, CO (November 23, 2025) – The Tufts University women's fencing team completed its stay at the Western Invitational with three matches on Sunday.
The Jumbos opened the day with a 16-11 loss to host Air Force, then fell 15-12 to Stanford University. Tufts closed the weekend with a strong 18-9 win over Brandeis University.
Facing teams who had top 25 finishes at the NCAA Championships last March all weekend, Tufts fared well despite being defeated in some matches.
Against Air Force, the 19th-place NCAA team, Tufts won saber 6-3. All three Jumbos – sophomore
Anahat Bawa, first-year
Asher Boynton and first-year
Emily Xu – won twice. Senior
Karen Bei took two of her three epee matches against the Falcons.
Tufts then finished even closer to a Stanford team that was ninth nationally last year. The epee squad won 6-3, as Bei, junior
Mikayla Joseph and first-year
Emily You took two matches apiece. Sophomore
Sophie Guan had both of Tufts' two wins in foil, while Boyton was undefeated (3-0) in saber play.
The Jumbos had victories in all three weapons against local rival Brandeis, who was 23rd at the NCAA's a year ago. An 8-1 victory in epee featured 3-0 marks by Bei and You, while Joseph won two out of three. Both foil and saber had 5-4 wins, with Boynton again going undefeated to lead saber and first-year
Layla Roy along with Guan winning twice each in foil.
For the three matches on Sunday, Boynton was an outstanding 8-1 (.889) in saber. She led the Jumbos in victories for the weekend with a 20-7 mark (.751), helping saber to a 44-37 record in nine matches. Bei was 12-5 (.706) in epee today and 19-7 (.731) for the weekend, leading Tufts to a winning record for the weekend (42-39) in epee. Nine wins each for sophomore
Saanvi Kapoor and Roy led foil at the Invitational.
The Jumbos won four out of nine matches at the Western Invitational in all and now have a 9-8 record overall.
Tufts will finish their first semester of action on December 7 at the Brandeis Invitational.
