CAMBRIDGE, MA (November 25, 2025) -- Senior forward
Scott Gyimesi became the 35th player in Tufts University men's basketball history to surpass 1,000 points for his career, helping the No. 23 Jumbos to a 74-67, come-from-behind win over host MIT in action from Rockwell Cage Tuesday evening.
Gyimesi becomes the first Tufts player to hit the 1,000 point mark since Tyler Aronson passed the milestone back in the 2022-23 season, while he sits with 1,009 points for his career after totaling 12 points against MIT. He also pulled 18 rebounds along with his point total, and has a chance to become the school's first-ever 1,000-point, 1,000 rebound player as he sits with 762 boards after tonight's win.
THe win didn't come easy for the Jumbos though, who trailed for the lion's share of the game and had to use a late rally to surge past the Engineers (3-3). Tufts trailed by six with 3:36 to go in regulation after a pair of MIT free throws, but two free throws by
James Morakis followed by a triple from
Jon Medley made it a one-point deficit at 64-63 with 2:14 to play.
Junior
Zion Watt posted a steal on the next possession for the Engineers, and Medley finished a driving lay-up in transition to give the Jumbos the lead with two minutes left.
MIT tied the game at 65 with a free throw by Wyatt Mowery, but a perfectly executed out-of-bounds play with 1:20 to play saw Gyimesi finished with the harm to five the Jumbos a three-point lead at 68-65 after the made freebie.
Tufts pushed its edge up to five on two Watt free throws, and was able to score the final four points of the game to rally for its fourth straight win overall and the fourth straight win in the series with the Engineers.
Medley had his best game of the season as Tufts stayed small for most of the second half, as the junior was 7-of-12 from the floor for 19 points, adding four boards and three assists.
James Morakis came off the bench to post 14 points, while Watt chalked up nine points and six caroms. Morakis will be the next Tufts player to hit 1,000 for his career, as he has 941 after Tuesday's double-digit output.
First-year
Ricardo Nieves provided a spark off the bench as he was 3-of-5 overall for seven points, and
Joshua Bernstein recorded six points and eight rebounds.
Tufts shot just 38.2 percent (26-68) from the field and 4-of-25 (16 percent) from behind the arc, but used a big 20-4 edge in points off turnovers to benefit from the 13 MIT mistakes. The Jumbos also had a 42-22 edge in points in the paint.
Mowery had a strong game for MIT, scoring 20 points, while Rome Delgado-Gonzalez just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. WIll Bland also had a solid contest with nine points, seven boards and five assists.
Tufts will get its longest break between games so far this season, getting four days off before heading to Keene State on Sunday, November 30 at 1 p.m. for a non-conference tilt with the Owls in Keene, NH.
