Win Over Penn State Leads Women's Fencing Performance at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, MA (December 7, 2025) – The Tufts University women's fencing team had a strong day of four wins in six matches at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Sunday.

The highlight of the meet for the Jumbos was a 16-11 victory over Penn State University, which finished seventh at the NCAA Championships last year. Tufts also had an exciting 14-13 victory against Boston College, as well as a 21-6 win against Lawrence University and a 23-4 defeat of Drew University. Tufts had a close 15-12 loss to St. John's University – fifth at NCAA's a year ago – and lost 19-8 against Brown University.

The win over Penn State featured Tufts victories by all three weapons. In a 6-3 saber win, Anahat Bawa, Asher Boynton and Emily Xu all won twice. The 5-4 score in foil saw a 3-0 mark by Sophie Guan and two wins from Saanvi Kapoor. Two wins apiece by Karen Bei and Mikayla Joseph led the 5-4 Tufts victory in epee.

The tightly-contested match against Boston College was led by saber's 6-3 success. Boynton won all three matches, while Bawa earned two victories. Foil and epee both dropped close 5-4 scores, with Layla Roy's two wins leading in foil and two wins from Bei pacing epee.

Chloe Wang, Jess Charalel and Kiki Liu were all undefeated (3-0) in foil's 9-0 victory against Drew, as was Boynton in saber and Olivia Judicke in epee. Perfect marks by Xu and Olympe Jean in saber and Bei in epee led Tufts in the victory over Lawrence.

The Jumbos' 12 points scored against St. John's was led by Guan's two wins in foil, a pair of wins each by Boynton and Xu in saber and two wins by Emily You for epee. Three victories by saber's Boynton led the Jumbos against Brown, and Bei took two out of three in epee.

Boyton's 13-2 record (.867) led the saber group, which was 36-18 overall today (.667). Xu also had a winning mark of 10-8 in saber, and Jean was 5-0 in her handful of matches. Bawa finished with eight victories.

A 9-3 record (.750) by Guan was Tufts' best in foil, where the Jumbos were 30-24 overall (.556). Wang (4-2), Charalel (3-2) and Liu (3-0) were successful in spot duty for the Jumbos.

The epee team, 28-26 (.519) for the day, had Bei's 10-5 mark (.667) leading the way. You won eight times and Olivia Judicke was 4-0 in limited action.

Tufts hits its semester break with a 12-10 overall victory. The team will host its annual Tufts Invitational on January 18 at the Gantcher Center.
