Overtime Power-Play Goal Lifts Ephs Over Jumbos 3-2

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (February 1, 2025) - Freshman Jake McManus scored a power-play goal 21 seconds into overtime to lift host Williams College to a 3-2 NESCAC men's hockey victory over Tufts University Saturday afternoon at Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Ephs take the two points for an overtime win while improving to 5-6-1 in the conference (8-8-2 overall). Tufts gets a point for the OT loss while dropping to 5-7 in the league and 7-9-1 overall.

The final score was the only lead of the game for Williams. The Jumbos had taken advantages of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period, but the Ephs twice scored tying goals within a minute of the Tufts tallies.

Starting OT on a power-play, the Ephs won the opening faceoff and did not lose possession. Playing four-on-three, Williams was able to set up in the Jumbo zone. McManus got the puck below the left circle and stuck a shot past Tufts goalie Gus Bylin for the victory.

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined to light the lamp four times in the second stanza. Tufts got it started at 7:29 with senior Harrison Bazianos scoring off the rebound of a shot from the right point by freshman Bryceon Lago.

The Ephs retaliated 47 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. After sophomore Brady Welsch had made a nice play at the right point to keep the puck in the Jumbo zone, he was open in the slot to take a pass from senior Owen Stadheim and score.

The Jumbos would take a 2-1 lead on freshman Rory Andriole's second goal in as many games. A strong play at his own blue line by senior defenseman Philippe Lamarre started the rush. He sent the puck to junior Liam O'Hare who found Andriole heading into the Eph zone. He skated past a defender and around Eph senior goalie Cal Sandquist to score at 16:25 of the period.

Williams would answer quickly again though. The Ephs sprung a three-on-two which quickly turned into a two-on-one with junior David Vieten passing left to Welsch for his second goal of the game just 48 seconds later.

Entering the third period Tufts had outshot Williams 28-18 to that point. However, the Ephs would have their best period of the game in the third, outshooting the Jumbos 11-7. Bylin stopped each Eph attempt though, as did Sandquist against against Tufts. However, the Jumbos took a penalty late in regulation and the Ephs would capitalize with the quick OT goal to win it.

Shots finished at 35-29 in favor of Tufts with Sandquist recording 33 saves and Bylin 26.

The Jumbos play their home-and-home weekend against travel partner Connecticut College next weekend, starting on the road Friday.
