CLINTON, NY (February 14, 2025) - Two goals in the second period by
Brennan Horn and
Harrison Bazianos, and 35 saves from Gus Bylin propelled the rejuvenated Tufts University hockey team to a 2-1 win at Hamilton College on Friday evening.
With the win on the road over the #9 nationally-ranked and NESCAC-leading Continentals, the Jumbos have now won five of their last eight games since they took a 6-1 loss against Hamilton back on January 17 in Malden. Tufts improved to 9-10-1 overall and 7-8 in NESCAC.
The Jumbos were unable to move up in the standings and remain fifth with 22 points. Colby College (24 pts), who entered the weekend fourth, won tonight 1-0 in overtime against Wesleyan. Third-place Bowdoin College (26 pts) also won (3-1 vs. Trinity).
Hamilton finds itself in a small rut, now without a regulation or OT win in three games. The Continentals fall to 15-5-1 overall and 11-3-1 in the league. They remain on top of NESCAC with 35 points.
The Jumbos had a quick start tonight, getting seven of the games' first eight shots on net. However, Hamilton came to life and had a 10-9 edge in shots after 20 minutes. Both teams killed two penalties in the first frame and it was 0-0 through one.
Tufts took a lead on a fluky goal 5:39 into the second period. Defenseman
Chris Throndson started a rush with a pass up to
Harrison Bazianos. He threaded the puck through to Horn at the Continental blue line. Horn bounced a shot on goal and Hamilton goalie Charlie Archer wasn't ready for it and the Jumbos had a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later,
Drew Pitts started a Tufts rush from his own end. He sent a puck up the right boards which
Marcus Sang poked through to Bazianos in the neutral zone. He charged into the Hamilton end on the right side and snapped one past Archer from the right circle for a 2-0 visitors' lead.
Hamilton would cut the lead in half by scoring two minutes into the third period. During sustained pressure in the Jumbo zone, Continental Justin Biraben used a Tufts player as a screen and put the puck past Bylin to the far side from the left circle.
The Continentals would out-shoot the Jumbos 15-6 in the third period. However, Bylin continued his excellent, steady play of the last few weeks making 14 saves in the frame to close out the win. When Hamilton pulled Archer with around two minutes left, Bylin had two saves and Jumbo forwards
Max Resnick and
Tyler Sedlak blocked shots to help keep the Continentals off the scoreboard.
Hamilton out-shot the Jumbos 36-24 overall. Archer made 22 stops at the Continental end.
The Jumbos move on to play at Amherst College tomorrow. Hamilton welcomes Connecticut College to Sage Rink.
