MEDFORD, MA (February 15, 2025) - The Tufts University women's indoor track and field team saw a school record fall and many new personal bests achieved in an action packed weekend at the Eagle Elite Invitational and Tufts Stampede Open.
On Friday at Boston College's Eagle Elite Invitational, senior pole vaulter
Sarah Firth broke her own school record with a third place mark of 3.91m (12' 10"). The jump broke the previous Tufts record set by Firth in 2022 by four centimeters (1 ¼"), and marked her fourth consecutive podium finish.
On Saturday at the Gantcher Center, the Jumbos carried Firth's strong performance over to the Tufts Stampede Open. Sophomore sprinter
Simisola Lawal set the tone with a second place finish in the 60m dash finals. Her 7.81 was a new personal best and was the 47th fastest time in the NCAA Division III. Lawal also ran for fourth place in the 200m dash, taking the highest position of any Jumbo with a 26.09. First year
Arielle Chechile was just behind her teammate in fifth place of the 200, finishing with a 26.13.
The 400m dash saw another personal best broken, as first year
Logan Elie finished in third with a 1:01.93. Elie set the table for a fantastic 600m race, as the Jumbos swept the podium with a one-two-three finish of
Phoebe Bryar,
Nina Corso and
Anne-Sophie Janssen. Bryar and Corso finished with new personal bests of 1:42.52 and 1:43.30 respectively.
It was a tight finish between two Jumbos at the top of the 800m run, as junior
Carly Rinko took first place and sophomore
Kaya West took second. The two were separated by just 0.62 seconds as West finished with a personal best of 2:20.65.
Sophomore
Sonia Olson had the highest finish in the mile run for Tufts, taking fourth place with a personal best time of 5:16.67. First year
Zoe Margolies continued the strong runs in the distance events by taking third place in the 5000m run. Her 17:51.87 was a new personal record and the 72nd fastest time in the NCAA Division III.
The final event on the track, the 4x400 relay, saw the team of Kral, Smith, Moriarty and Chechile take second place with a 4:19.37.
Tufts rounded out the day with an excellent performance in all three jumping events. The high jump saw
Harper Meek finish second with a 1.61m. The long jump saw
Elysse Cumberland finish second with a 5.45m, the 43rd best mark in the NCAA Division III.
Jordan Andrew finished third in the same event with a 5.30m. Cumberland and Andrew combined once again in the triple jump, as Cumberland took first and Andrew second with a 11.71m and 11.57m respectively. Both triple jump scores were in the top 20 of the NCAA Division III, with Cumberland landing the 16th longest and Andrew the 17th.
Tufts saw another weekend of improvement all around, and will prepare for a weekend of action at the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday, February 22nd.
