MEDFORD, MA (March 2, 2025) -- The No. 15 Tufts University women's tennis squad completed a strong weekend of action to start the spring campaign, as the Jumbos swept a pair of matches Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Wheaton College before topping Division I Bryant University 4-3 in play from Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center.
Match 1: Tufts 7, Wheaton 0
The Jumbos had no problems in the first match of Sunday's doubleheader, sweeping the visiting Lyons. In doubles, first-year
Ryan Wuhrman and senior
Sophie Wax posted an unblemished 6-0 victory at No. 2 to get things going. The Jumbos picked up the doubles' point thanks to a 6-1 win by
Steffy Jullian and Evalina Anastasi at No. 3 over Maya Brennan and Taylor Wilson.
At No. 1 doubles,
Melanie Woodbury and
Rachel Cranley topped Alissa Ortiz and Kara Greenlee, 6-3 to finish pairs' play.
In individual play, Wax registered her second win of the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Greenlee at No. 1 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Jumbos. First-year
Brooklyn Bindas posted her first singles' win of the spring at No. 3 to make it 3-0, topping Ortiz 6-1, 6-0.
The clinching victory for Tufts was registered by Anastasi at No. 4, as she won all 12 games over Asia Hollis to make it 4-0. First-year
Nadia Khera moved to 3-0 in singles this spring so far with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Laila Haraj-Sai at No. 2, while Jullian also cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The final match to finish was at No. 6, as Wuhrman tallied a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Brennan to round out the morning play. Wuhrman won both of her singles' matches on the weekend at No. 6.
Match 2: Tufts 4, Bryant 3
The Jumbos and Division I Bulldogs of Bryant played a very competitive match in the weekend finale for Tufts.
Cranley and classmate
Lucy Mitchell started the match at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 win over Yahli Noy and Lucia Pino, while
Ellie Gershaw and
Nikki Kintiroglou teamed up at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Lisa Marie Dugec and Maria Diaz.
At No. 1 doubles,
Melanie Woodbury and
Stephanie Woodbury battled hard but dropped a tiebreaker in a 7-6 (5) defeat to Natalia Vela and Caitlyn Munson.
In singles, Cranley pushed the Tufts lead up to 2-1 after posting a 6-3, 6-1 win over Munson at the No. 3 spot. Bryant battled back with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to tie the match at two, but Mitchell put Tufts back on top thanks to a gritty three-set victory over Diaz, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Bulldogs would once again deadlock the score, this time evening the match at three wins apiece after a 6-3, 6-3 win by Aurora Pedwell at No. 5 over Tufts' first-year
Athena Li.
With the match in the balance, Kintiroglou would put the team on her shoulders and pick up a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Dugec to clinch the victory for the Jumbos.
For the weekend, Tufts went 20-4 in singles play while adding a very strong 10-2 mark in doubles' action.

Tufts (4-0) will jump into New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play Friday, heading to Lewiston, ME to battle Bates College at 4 p.m. on March 7.
