Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Quick Start Leads No. 2 Tufts Past No. 22 CNU Sunday, 15-5

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (March 23, 2025) -- The Tufts University women's lacrosse squad, ranked No. 2 in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, scored the first 11 goals Sunday as it rolled past host and No. 22 Christopher Newport University in play from Jennings Stadium.

The Jumbos (7-0) were able to dominate the possession battle in the opening quarter, thanks to turning CNU over five times while adding five draw controls. Tufts also was stellar on free position attempts Sunday, going 9-of-15 including scoring on four ot its five in the first quarter.

In the first frame, Tufts got on the board quickly thanks to a Caroline Conaghan goal just 100 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. Less than a minute later Conaghan struck again on a free position attempt to double the Jumbo lead. Senior Margie Carden and Madeline Delaney each tallied twice followed by a Schuyler Lloyd goal to finish the first quarter score for Tufts with a 7-0 lead.

Tufts racked up four more goals in the second quarter before CNU got on the board with 1:25 left in the half to make it 11-1 at the break. Senior Pascale de Buren had five first-half stops while outshooting the host Captains 20-9 over the first 30 minutes.

The Jumbos would keep the running clock going in the second half for the majority of the time as they rolled to their seventh straight win to start the season.

Carden finished with a team-high four points on three goals and an assist, going 3-for-4 on free position shots, while Conaghan finished with three goals and a caused turnover. Lloyd had two goals and a helper, while Delaney, Grace Hammong and Allie Zorn each scored a pair of goals.

De Buren finished with eight stops in goal for the Jumbos, picking up five ground balls and causing three turnovers as well. Junior Elsa Schutt had three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Genna Gibbons had two grounders, two forced giveaways and three draw wins.

Senior Caroline Cromwell forced three turnovers as well, as the Jumbos stifled the Captains into 15 mistakes Sunday. Tufts was a perfect 17-for-17 on clear attempts Sunday as well.

Maddie Lamy had two points on a goal and assist for CNU (5-6).

Tufts will have a few days off before hosting No. 25 MIT Thursday, Marck 27 at 5 p.m. in non-conference play on Bello Field.
