Men's Rowing Opens Spring With Races Against Harvard Lightweights and Bates

CAMBRIDGE, MA (March 29, 2025) - The Tufts University men's rowing team started its spring season with four races on the historic Charles River Saturday. The Jumbos faced the Harvard University Lightweight team and Bates College in first, second and third varsity races, and just Bates in a fourth varsity contest.

Cold and rain made for very difficult conditions on the Charles today, with variable cross tailwinds and heavy chop. Floating starts were managed with course distances between 1900m and 2000m.

In the IRCA/IRA Men's Collegiate Rowing Preseason Poll that came out this week, Tufts was #2 in the D3 varsity eight rankings with Bates tied for #7. Harvard is the #1-ranked D1 Lightweight 8+.

The Jumbos opened the spring with a first varsity line-up of Aidan Keusch as coxswain, Charlie Guerra, Maxwell Rosenberger, Harrison Sweet, Max Landers, Peter Conard, Peter McCormick, Mark Machle and Theo Balavoine. They put together  time of 6:15.1 which was well ahead of NESCAC rival Bates (6:34.7), but behind the Harvard Lightweight 1V (5:58.4).

The Tufts second varsity had coxswain Lucas Resnik with Owen McKendry, Mason Sibley, Patrick Moran, JT Machle, Xander Mesires, Abe Nelson, Seamus Ruiseal and Miles Smith. They timed 6:14.9, which was five seconds faster than the Bobcats (6:19.6) and behind Harvard (5:59.2).

For the third varsity race, coxswain Jamie Forman steered Alex Flynn, Dominic Svagdis, Gonzalo Escajadillo, Lev Tolkoff, Chris Millay, Ryan Kane, Finn Barrett and Hayden Stone for Tufts. They raced the shortest course due to the conditions and posted a 5:49.5 time that was a half-second behind Harvard's 5:48.9. Bates came across in a 6:08.0 finish.

The 4V Jumbos - coxswain Lexi Acosta, Justin Sun, Logan Thom, Jack Craig, Nathan Henderson, Ethan Seidner, Saul Meacham, Parker Mace and Robert Arsenault - went head-to-head with Bates and defeated the Bobcats with a 6:49.6 time to 7:22.7.

Tufts will host #3 Trinity College and #5 US Coast Guard on Malden River next Saturday.
