Tufts Men’s Tennis Rolls Past Williams, Improves to 15-1

MEDFORD, MA (April 13, 2025) — On the second day of a back-to-back, the No. 2 Tufts University men's tennis team continued their winning streak as it reached nine with a 6-1 win over No. 27 Williams College in conference action from Gantcher Center Sunday.

Although Tufts has historically struggled against Williams, the tide has shifted since 2022, with Tufts winning three of the last four match-ups between the two New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) squads.

The No. 1 doubles match was a thrilling showdown between two of the top three doubles teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Northeast regional rankings. The match-up saw 2nd ranked Jumbos Vuk Vuksanovic and Javier Gonzalez go up against the 3rd ranked Ephs Nicolas Chen and Shawn Berdia. Vuksanovic and Gonzalez improved to 12-2 as a pair this season after their 6-2 demolition of the top Williams duo.

Derin Acaroglou and Lachie Macintosh found similar success at No. 3 playing Jack Ling and Diego Marin. Up 4-3 Acarglou and Macintosh delivered a big break to put themselves in a position to serve for the match. Acaroglou held serve to close out the match in style, winning 6-3 and taking the doubles point home for the Bo's. No. 2 pairing Sacha Maes and Alex Ganchev held serve down 6-5 to force a tiebreaker against Simon Volkema and Andrew Chong. Maes and Ganchev powered through the tiebreaker eventually winning 7-6 (7-4).

At No. 1 singles, Vuksanovic continued his reign of dominance beating Chen, who he had just faced in doubles, 6-2, 6-0. Vuksanovic remains undefeated in NESCAC singles play, making a great case to return to the All-NESCAC First Team Singles and a strong shot at being the NESCAC Player of the Year.

The No. 5 singles match was just as consistent seeing Andrej Djokic move to a 12-2 record this year with his 6-2, 6-1 straight sets victory over Marin. Djokic showed great composure throughout, not wavering from the success he found early in the match.

No. 2 singles was an absolute battle between Gonzalez and Berdia. Gonzalez took the first set 6-3 but quickly found himself down 4-1 in the second. Gonzalez showed true grit battling back to 5-5 where he delivered a clutch break. He played a flawless final game winning the second set 7-5 and supplying the match-clinching point for the Jumbos.

Macintosh ran into some problems at No. 4 singles losing the first set 7-5. He wasn't able to bounce back in the second set, falling 6-2 to Ling.

At No. 6 singles, Stavros Mastrogamvrakis kept up his pristine ten-match win streak, beating Chong 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 The freshman from Greece looks incredibly comfortable contributing to this stacked Tufts team and should continue to be a bright spot in their lineup for years to come.

At No. 3, Acaroglou also found himself in trouble losing the first set 6-4 to Volkema. He fought hard to just squeak out a 7-6 (7-5) takedown in the second set. Acaroglu capped off the day with a 10-5 win in the third set tiebreaker to win his match.

Next Saturday the Jumbos will play No. 44 Conn College at 10 a.m. in Medford before heading over to Waltham to compete against No. 36 Brandeis at 2 p.m.
