MEDFORD, MA (April 19, 2025) -- The No. 3 Tufts University men's tennis team kept the positive vibes going Saturday afternoon, as the Jumbos swept its two matches on the day knocking off Connecticut College 7-0 on Voute Courts before traveling to Brandeis University to top the Judges 5-2 in Waltham.
Match 1 - Tufts 7, Conn. College 0
The first match of this same-day double-header saw the No. 3 Tufts men's tennis team challenge the No. 49 Connecticut College Camels on the Vouté Tennis Courts. The Bo's hold an eleven-match win streak over the Camels dating all the way back to 2013. In last year's matchup, the Jumbos swept the match 9-0, only dropping a single set over both singles and doubles. The combination of historic dominance and the double-header meant that there was a great opportunity for the team to showcase its depth in this early morning match.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Nicolas Tremblay paired up with
Aarush Ganji. The Jumbo duo was faced with very little resistance, beating Walker Mulligan and James Serhant 6-0 in a speedy eighteen-minute set. No. 2 doubles saw
Derin Acaroglu and
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis take on Krishh Tipnis and Sigmund Winiecki. Acaroglu and Mastrogamvrakis cruised through the match to put themselves up 5-2, setting up Mastrogamvrakis to serve and close out the set 6-2. No. 1 pair
Alex Ganchev and
Sacha Maes were the last to finish, after struggling to break their opponents Nikhil Agarwal and Wolf Sohlberg early in the match they found themselves up 3-2 at the crossover. They picked up the pace for the rest of the set, closing it out 6-2 and providing the clean sweep for the Bo's at doubles.
Singles proved to be just as controlling for the Jumbos as they won every match with relative ease. The supremacy began at No. 3 singles and saw Maes play Sohlberg. Maes put together a wire-to-wire victory dismantling Sohlberg 6-1, 6-0. The senior moves to a 6-1 singles record on the season. His doubles partner Ganchev saw similar success vs Jules Taylor-Ker at No. 2 singles winning 6-1, 6-1. This was Ganchevs first match of the year at a spot higher than 4 and he delivered in a big way for the team.
No. 1 singles featured the one and only
Vuk Vuksanovic playing Arjun Premkumar. Vuksanovic struggled finding his rhythm early, but won the first 6-3. The second set was standard for the Tufts star as he fired in an array of serves and powered himself to a 6-0 win. Another triumph for Vuksanovic as he remains undefeated in NESCAC play and adds Premkumar to his list of demolished opponents.
Tremblay showcased a great performance versus Agarwal at No. 4 singles. After breezing through the first set 6-0, the next set proved to be more of a test. Tremblay was neck and neck with Agarwal throughout the second set, eventually edging him out 7-5.
Davide Mirza was the next Jumbo to add a point to the overall score. Mirza took down Gavin Anderson at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3, in his fourth appearance of the season. The last player to finish was sophomore Takehero Shuda who provided the point that swept the match for Tufts. He had an easy time in the first set taking it 6-3. The second set was a bit more troublesome for Shuda as Mulligan stormed back to win the second set 6-2 to send the match to a deciding set. Shuda showed lots of patience, sealing the match 6-1 in the final set.
ORDER OF FINISH: 3, 1, 2, 4, 6, 5
Match 2 - Tufts 5, Brandeis 2
After taking care of business in Medford, the team headed over to Waltham to face the No. 33 Brandeis Judges. In the last two matchups, the Jumbos had won pretty easily, with scores of 7-2 in 2023 and 8-1 in 2024. Needless to say, some of the Tufts veterans felt very comfortable playing this Brandeis squad.
The Bo's made quick work in their doubles matches. No. 1 singles pair
Vuk Vuksanovic and
Javier Gonzalez toppled Dylan Walters and Daniel Shemesh 6-2.
Alex Ganchev and
Sacha Maes brought home a 6-1 victory, their second doubles win of the day, over Pierce Garbett and Aidan Wang-Fan at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles,
Derin Acaroglu and
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis cruised to a 6-1 win over David Galvez and Benjamin Kotzen
Freshman
Eren Cheung got the ball rolling in singles action for the Bo's. Cheung played an exceptional match, taking down Galvez 6-0, 6-1 in thirty-five minutes. He has won all five of his matches this season, only dropping a single set in the process.
Garv Bahl won his fourth straight match of the season, defeating Garbett 6-1, 6-3 at No.3 singles. He was followed up by Mastrogamvrakis who won his eleventh straight match, a great feat for the freshman. Mastrogamvrakis beat Kotzen at No. 4 singles 6-1 7-5.
Playing higher in the lineup than usual, both Acaroglu and
Andrej Djokic ran into some trouble.= At No. 1 singles Acaroglu was bested 6-4, 6-2 coming at the hands of Walters. Djokic had a little more success at the No. 2 facing Shemesh but eventually lost 11-9 in the third set ten-point tiebreaker.
At No. 6 singles, Tufts picked up an uncontested win as Brandeis was unable to field a player, awarding freshman
Nico Tremblay the victory by walkover. Though he didn't get a chance to compete on court, the automatic point added to the Jumbos' dominant showing on the day, defeating the Judges 5-2.
The Jumbos had a dominant day overall as they improved to 17-1 and extended their win streak to eleven straight. Next weekend they will play their final two matches of the regular season. On Saturday facing No. 57 Colby College at 2 p.m. in Maine before returning home to Medford on Sunday to take on the No. 7 Amherst Mammoths at 2 p.m.
