HARTFORD, CONN. (April 18, 2025) - The Tufts University baseball team was downed by the Trinity College Bantams on a Friday to forget down in Hartford.
Tufts got the ball rolling well, scoring the first runs of the game in the first inning of action. Leonard notched the first hit of the game, poking a single through the infield to left-center.
James Henshon continued to swing a hot stick, singling through the right side to move Leonard over to third. An early break went the Jumbos (12-15) way as
Cooper Smith reached on an error by the Bantams (13-13) to score Leonard.
Owen McKiernan stepped up and cleared the basepaths with a homer to left center, his first of the season. A 4-0 lead carried the Jumbos into the third inning.
Leonard led off the top of the third with a homer of his own to right field, taking advantage of the gusty winds in that direction. Tufts now led by five, but it was short-lived.
The Bantams responded with six runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of an error that extended the inning. From there, the home team piled it on the Jumbos, scoring in the next four frames. By the end of the sixth, they led 16-5.
Tufts managed a couple runs in the top of the seventh.
Connor Brala led off the inning with a single, and was brought all the way around by a double from
Ozzie Fleischer. Leonard kept the inning going with a two-out RBI single to score Fleischer, but the momentum ended there as Smith flew out. The pair of runs were cancelled out by a three spot in the bottom of the frame by the hosts.
Tufts dropped the game 19-7 and will move on to game two versus Trinity tomorrow at noon, with the final game of the series to be played soon after as part of a double header.
