WORCESTER, MA (April 20, 2025) - The Tufts University men's rowing first varsity eight retained the Baker Cup for the fifth straight year with its victory against Worcester Polytechnic Institute today at Lake Quinsigamond.
Ranked fourth in the most recent IRCA/IRA Men's Collegiate Rowing Poll, the Jumbos led wire-to-wire in the varsity eight with a time of 5:57.71.  Their Baker Cup opponent and host WPI - ranked 10th - placed third overall in today's 1V8 race with a 6:07.87 finish. Sixth-ranked Marietta College, in from Ohio for today's races, placed second with a 6:03.32 time that was slightly more than five seconds behind the Jumbos. Connecticut College was fourth in the race (6:45.88).

Tufts would also win the second varsity race by a healthy margin of eight-plus seconds. The Jumbos' 6:02.5 finish was in front of second-place Marietta's 6:10.71 mark. WPI came across the finish line in third place at a 6:17.2 time and Connecticut College was fourth (7:06.4).

Conditions on Lake Quinsigamond became worse as the morning went along, with wind creating a strong tailwind and whitecaps in the water. The third varsity race was held, but the men's varsity four race and three women's races scheduled at later times had to be cancelled.
In the 3V8, Tufts' third boat won the race with no time taken. The Jumbo fourth varsity followed 15.65 seconds later. WPI's third varsity was 20.91 seconds behind the lead and a fourth WPI team was 44.31 seconds behind the lead.
