Coed Sailing Challenging for Top 8 Spot in Stage 1 at Team Race Nationals

CRANSTON, RI (April 24, 2025) - The Tufts University coed sailing team is in competition to advance following the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Team Race Nationals today.

The Jumbos are currently 12th in the Championship with a 5-6 record following 11 races on Thursday. On Friday they have four races remaining to complete Stage 1, which is a round robin of all 16 teams at the event.

If conditions allow for the preferred format, the top eight teams from Stage 1 will advance to a Stage 2 on Friday.

Though Tufts is currently 12th, they are among six teams who have 5-5 or 5-6 records and are challenging to gain a spot in the top eight for Stage 1.

The Jumbo results on Thursday were victories over Bowdoin College, Georgetown University, Tulane University, the University of Michigan and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. They earned perfect 1-2-3 finishes against Tulane and Michigan. The Tufts losses were against host Brown University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Stanford University, St. Mary's College (Md.) and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Jumbos had nine sailors in action today as they used several different combinations. Junior Ben Mueller skippered with sophomore Courtland Doyle as crew in four races, with first-year Kate Castleberry and sophomore Cody Lamoreux as crew for three races each and with senior Nicolas Echarte as crew for one race. Sophomore Kurt Stuebe skippered with senior Naomi Pedersen as crew 10 times and Doyle as crew once. Sophomore skipper Wyatt Bischoff raced with senior crew Cindy Wang in nine races and with Lamoreux as crew twice.

Yale University currently leads the Championship with a 9-2 record. Harvard and Roger Williams University both have 8-3 records in second and third place (tie-breakers used). Dartmouth is fourth (8-3), and Brown and Stanford are both 7-4 for fifth and sixth. Tulane, Boston College and Navy are all 5-5 thus far, while Tufts is joined by Coast Guard and St. Mary's with 5-6 records. Behind that group are College of Charleston (3-7), Georgetown (3-8), Bowdoin (1-9) and Michigan (0-10).

Day 2 of the ICSA Team Race Nationals is scheduled to begin on Friday at 10 AM.
